Daniel Spoerri’s Topographies: Networks of Exchange

Conference: 22-23 October 2018.

Paris, Centre Allemand d’histoire de l’art

Daniel Spoerri’s wide-ranging art is situated at the crossroads of numerous artistic tendencies. Although Spoerri is perhaps best known as a Nouveau Réaliste artist and creator of the "Trap Picture", this categorization in fact corresponds to only a small part of his work. Spoerri’s films, poetry, books, food art, and activities as an organizer of events and exhibitions all exemplify the diversity and breadth of his research. During the 1960s, his works brought him into close association with Fluxus and Zero. Today, in the wake of new questions and research, his ongoing oeuvre can be repositioned in relation to its multiple networks of influence and exchange.

This conference invites papers that present new scholarly and interdisciplinary perspectives on Spoerri’s art. How might his works engage with hierarchies of value or with social relations? In what ways do they reimagine or query the role of the spectator, the individual, or the group? How do they address cultural traditions, issues of materiality and memory, non-Western art, or the history of Western art itself? Many strands of Spoerri’s work were initially forged in the socially and politically charged context of 1960s Europe. How does his work continue to speak to the present?
