6 Week Artist in Residency

Type: Residencies, Workshops, Exchanges [View all]
Posted by: Furman University
Deadline: Fri, June 1st, 2018

Furman University seeks applicants for the True Artist in Residency, a six-week program that began in 2015 through the generous support of the True Harringan (’14) family. We are currently seeking applicants for the Spring 2019 academic year. Deadline for applications is June 1, 2018

The Artist in Residency program awards one residency per academic year for a visiting artist/designer to work at the school, developing a new work in collaboration with students and faculty. The residency period is typically six weeks, however, the artist is welcome to submit an additional proposal for a full-semester course; this course would be compensated according to current adjunct rates at the university. The program is part of The Furman Advantage, a program that aims to build educational value through student experience. The residency provides enrolled students at Furman University with an alternative learning opportunity to engage with practicing artists/designers. To witness and partake in the creation of a defined work from idea to realization is the centerpiece of the True Artist Residency. The culmination of this residency is an exhibition and presentation that summarizes the artist’s process and work accomplished.

Eligibility
This residency is open to emerging and professional artists/designers who reside in North America, and hold an MFA or have a record of equivalent professional achievement. Preference will be given to artists who live outside the upstate South Carolina region. The ideal candidate must value collaboration and have good social and communication skills. It is the goal of the True Residency to foster an atmosphere of creative activity that extends throughout the university community.

Compensation and Expectations
Resident artists will receive a $6,000 stipend for the six-week residency and will be provided with 24-hr access to the Furman Art Department as well as a private 850 sq. ft. studio located within the art department complex. Artists are responsible for their own food, housing, transportation, materials and supplies.
