Artist Residency - Visitor Center Artist Camp

Type: Residencies, Workshops, Exchanges [View all]
Posted by: Art Shape Mammoth
Deadline: Fri, June 1st, 2018

The Visitor Center Artist Camp is a near-wilderness artist residency site in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We seek to combine the experience of wilderness living and resourcefulness with a contemporary art and ecology conversation. Our goal is to promote creativity and ingenuity through skill sharing, local material-sourcing, and instructor-supported sculpture facilities, and to encourage new ways of thinking about the world through DIY practices, collaboration, and discussion of sustainability in art and in life.

Using simple tools and mostly handmade equipment, we are teaching and learning as we build community and explore our passions. We dig our own clay from the ground, hand-process it and formulate simple clay bodies, sculpt, and fire it on site. We cast recycled aluminum into molds made from the local clay. We work with local homesteader, saw mill operator and timber-framing expert Mel Seeger, who built his own sawmill from a Mac truck, and from whom resident artists can learn milling, building, and a variety of homesteading techniques. Previous years’ artists have also created site-specific installations in the forest, travelled the area capturing photographs of the old mining and logging towns nearby, made their own traditional Finnish-style beer, worked on video projects, and painted images of the inspiring landscape of the UP.

Join us July 28th - August 10th, 2018. Work with the local clay, work with the master builder at his Sawmill, or work on any independent project that can be supported by the VCAC’s rugged setting and adventurous attitude. We invite artists to experience a practice focused on sustainability and self-sufficiency by locally-sourcing and hand-processing their materials whenever possible, while living and working communally in a beautiful wilderness environment. We are open to any and all ideas for your art adventure! Let us know what you’d like to work on while at camp, and we’ll try our best to make it happen!

The programming for this residency is intended for both personal and collective growth. We will share our skills and ideas with each other though demos, presentations, show-and-tells, and campfire discussions. We work together to build connections and community within our individual practices. We take exciting field trips to go hiking, swimming, canoeing, and adventuring, to the magestic Lake Superior, gorgeous waterfalls on the Ontonagon River, and historic sites throughout the vast Ottawa National Forest.
