Curator: Astrid Kaemmerling, Ph.D. with the support of Incline Gallery director, Shirin Makaremi. 

 

When we walk, our feet carry our bodies through space. When we walk, our body is exposed to innumerous stimuli. Supported by our senses, we enter a field that requires us to constantly adapt to the changing environment and generate meaning that allows us to create knowledge needed to continue traversing streets, alleys, roads, and other passageways opening up in front of us. Whether in a city or rural landscape, through the act of walking, the physical, topographical and socio cultural layout of the environment we live in is understood experientially. Inspired by Francesco Careri’s publication this exhibit asks what information can we unearth through the act of  walking?

 

For “California Walkscapes” (2018) artist are invited to respond to walking from a number of different perspectives – for example, considering walking in the context of the body, urbanity, place, migration or culture. All formats are welcome: visual, performance, video, installation, and/or sound art or a combination of media. Walkshops can be integrated into the programming throughout the duration of the exhibition. The work has to be dropped-off in person ready for install on either 10/29 or 10/30/2018 & picked up the week of 11/5-11/11/2018. Walkshops must be held in person. Digital equipment (incl. cables etc.) to exhibit work has to be provided throughout the entire time of the exhibition. 

 

Please send your work proposal to kaemmerling.Astrid@gmail.com, Headline “California Walkscapes Submission.” Please submit your work using google drive to share larger files and title work “Lastname_Worktitle.jpg.” In the email,  include a link to your homepage, a short bio (300 words), a description of work submitted in which you explain your work and how the work connects to theme & exhibit title as well as standard information about the work. Collaborative submissions are welcome.
