Paint School is a free master class in the theory and practice of painting that takes place in New York City. This lecture-based program brings twelve fellows together with faculty members who are widely recognized as among the most exceptional painters working today. 2018-19 faculty includes Doug Ashford, Matt Connors, Anoka Faruqee, Jennie C. Jones, Carrie Moyer, Amy Sillman, and Will Villalongo.

Inspired by alternative educational initiatives like Black Mountain College, Paint School is unaccredited but extraordinarily rigorous. Presented in the style of a post-graduate fellowship, this program aims to enrich the discourse of contemporary painting through peer exchange. Fellows are expected to possess a significant history of engagement with the field and a desire to participate in a community focused on dialogic interchange. This program is best suited for painters who have completed their formal education.

The main content of Paint School is a series of group discussions between fellows and faculty. These discussions use texts selected by faculty and fellows, as well as in-person experiences, as launch points for critical response. Fellows are expected to complete 2 to 8 hours of reading per month and attend 2 meetings per month, each lasting 3 to 5 hours. In addition, there is a single all-day meeting on November 30 for which fellows must prepare a 30-minute slide lecture; and three to five additional trips organized by Paint School 2017-18 fellow Cynthia Daignault that are focused on lived experience.

The theme of the 2018-19 session of Paint School will be: Color. Color is one of the most enduring and elemental components of painting, and it is one of the most trenchant markers of painting’s capacity to reflect the discourses and visual languages of its time. Color also offers the artist a tool to critique these histories: it is key in the history of abstraction and modernism, it is a formal analogue of racial, sexual, and gendered identities that allows the artist to render important political questions visible. Through a selection of readings and discussions, we will explore color’s multifaceted and contradictory operations as well as imagine its continued potential to galvanize painting, and art in general, through its essential place in an increasingly saturated visual world.
