Visiting Artist Residency

Type: Residencies, Workshops, Exchanges [View all]
Posted by: Middle Tennessee State University
Deadline: Mon, January 28th, 2019

Mission:

Middle Tennessee Visiting Artists Program is designed to support visiting artists’ research in an immersive studio environment. While being afforded valuable studio time, participating artists will gain teaching experience, working with other artists, students, and community members. Additionally, the artists will be actively contributing to the growth of the first permanent collection of art at MTSU. These contributions will create a visual record of the program and the artists’ interaction with the Middle Tennessee community. We will document the process, artwork, and activities so they continue to be employed as teaching tools and can be incorporated into broader discussions of artwork in the Murfreesboro and Middle Tennessee area. By stimulating dialogue between visiting artists, students, the arts community, and residents of the surrounding counties, we will demonstrate the importance of arts education and foster a culture of support and advocacy for the Arts in Tennessee.

Description:

Artists will pursue an in depth investigation into one concept or technique. This 3 week residency (May 13th -May 31) is scheduled in conjunction with the Maymester Summer Session. The participating artist will be working in proximity with students enrolled in a Relief Printing Workshop. Visiting Artists will be provided private on-campus accommodations, a private studio space, parking pass, basic print materials, and a $1500.00 stipend. Travel to and from MTSU is the responsibility of the selected artist.

Participating artists will present a one hour public lecture, offer an all ages public workshop, and lead one Master’s class for the students registered in the Maymester Print Workshop. At the end of the residency, one piece the artist has produced during their residency will be donated to the MTSU permanent art collection. Artists will be asked to submit an evaluation of their experience, along with recommendations for how the program could be implemented moving forward.

Information regarding the program, updates regarding Visiting Artist events, and a gallery of work generated by the program will be available online and promoted through print and social media.

Jury Process:

Artists will be selected on the basis of their merit, strength of project proposal and the significance of their current and previous contributions to their fields.

Submission requirements include: a portfolio of 10 images, updated CV, proposal for project and community engagement activities, and contact information for two references. This information will be uploaded to the Department of Art and Design’s Submittable account.

The MTSU Department of Art and Design recognizes and respects the diversity of our students and community. We welcome applications by all artists regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexuality, socio-economic class, age, religion, or disability to apply.

Studio Facilities:

Artists will be housed within a private studio within the printmaking facilities of Todd Hall. This studio features a large work table, several small working surfaces, wall space, screenprint table, small etching press and inking area. While participating artists need not engage specifically with printmaking, the space is equipped to serve those who might. Todd hall also features expansive sculpture and ceramics facilities, digital labs as well as book arts and letterpress. Regardless of project, the artist must be proficient on all equipment used and be completely self-sufficient.
