The Tlacopac International Artist Residency in Mexico City was established December 19, 2018 by New York City-based Founder/Project Developer & Manager Jan Hanvik.  It received its first artist residents in January, 2019. This residency in the southern part of Mexico City is dedicated to the practice and pursuit of all art forms. RESIDENCIA ARTÍSTICA TLACOPAC welcomes not only individual artists, but also university and conservatory art student groups, as well as performing arts groups – theater, dance, & music- and college, university, or conservatory level performing arts programs, as it includes a wood-floored performance gymnasium suitable for the development of works by 2 up to 10-12 members.  This is a rarity: approximately 6% of artist residencies worldwide offer residencies in the performing arts.

The 5-bedroom house, designed by legendary Mexican architect Manuel Parra (1911 – 1997;  https://mxcity.mx/2017/04/manuel-parra-el-otro-arquitecto-del-siglo-xx/) with ample gardens and patios, is historic in its connection to the lives of US-born painter and jewelry designer Annette Nancarrow (1907 – 1991; www.annettenancarrow.com), who designed jewelry worn by Frida Kahlo, Peggy Guggenheim, and others, & her husband US-born Mexican avant-garde composer Conlon Nancarrow (1912 – 1997; www.conlonnancarrow.org), who lived there while they were still married to each other. The house also welcomed innumerable other seminal figures in the development of Mexico City as a cradle of international cutting edge art in the 1930s-50s. Annette among her many accomplishments was also assistant to the great Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco. The TLACOPAC RESIDENCY will revive the hotbed of cultural activity that was Mexico City of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, welcoming diverse artists from all cultural, national and ethnic backgrounds, to contribute to global dialog through the arts.  Until subsidies are established, the lowest possible fees are charged to artists and university or other art school programs.
