Type: Exhibition Opportunities [View all]
Posted by: Peters Valley School of Craft
Deadline: Mon, July 1st, 2019

Peters Valley School of Craft will celebrate its 50th Anniversary in September of 2020. As a key part of our anniversary program, we will mount milestone exhibitions in two exciting venues to share the story of the school’s impact on the field through the voices of former and current artistic staff, students, and instructors. Thanks to generous support from the Windgate Foundation, we seek to hire two emerging craft curators for two unique opportunities. Each curator will oversee the production and all curatorial aspects of one of the following exhibitions.

Venue: Hunterdon Art Museum (HAM)

Location: Clinton, New Jersey (50 miles from Manhattan)

Exhibit dates: October 2020 through January 2021

Purpose: To present Peters Valley within a greater, global context and offer a thorough investigation of formative moments in the school’s history

Engagement period: July 2019-February 2021

Venue: The National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts –(NCECA) 54th Conference

Location: Richmond, Virginia

Exhibit date: March 2020

Purpose: To showcase the significant ceramic work produced by artists associated with Peters Valley since the school’s founding

Engagement period: July 2019- April 2020

Compensation

The selected curator for each show will receive:

- $5,000 honorarium (50% in advance, 50% upon completion of project)

- $500 travel stipend

- Lodging on Peters Valley campus for duration of site visits

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include conducting onsite and offsite research on major figures in Peters Valley history (ca. 1970s – present), compiling exhibition checklists, drafting correspondence to artists, writing and editing didactics, conducting interviews, and developing a comprehensive timeline of the organization using archival materials. The curators will work along with executive, curatorial, installation, education and communications staff at both Peters Valley and the Hunterdon Art Museum (where applicable) to make appropriate contacts and connections and will benefit from the mentorship of two Directors and professional experiences with gallery and museum staff.

In addition to archival research, each curator will be responsible for conceptualizing the exhibition spaces for the shows. They will work with staff to suggest layout schemes and graphics or text labels for the display. The curators will develop the digital components of the shows, as well as related programming, such as educational lectures, gallery talks, artist demonstrations, and family programs. Finally, each curator will create content and be involved in the production of the catalogue for their respective exhibition, which will introduce the reader to formative moments in Peters Valley’s history and offer essays about select themes from the exhibitions.

Eligibility

The ideal candidates will have a demonstrated interest in craft history and a high level of familiarity with the contemporary craft and design field. They will have strong archival research, writing, and editing skills, as well as curatorial interests along with the ability to work independently and in collaboration. Past experience working in arts organizations with exhibition preparation will be a plus. Peters Valley will offer lodging for a period of time in order for the emerging curators to work on-site at Peters Valley and the Hunterdon Art Museum (when applicable). We are flexible with the specific start and end dates and can work with an academic schedule.

The selected curators will leave with hands-on experience in the development and actualization of significant exhibitions, and will gain confidence to pursue future curatorial projects. They will hone archival research skills and further their knowledge of the history of craft and craft education.

Please send a cover letter that refers to your interest and capacity and an up-to-date C.V. to development@petersvalley.org, with the subject line “Peters Valley Curatorial Application- YOUR NAME”.
