Beyond the Surface, SDA Biennial Conference

Type: Conferences & Symposia [View all]
Posted by: Surface Design Association
Deadline: Tue, October 1st, 2019

Beyond the Surface, Surface Design Association (SDA) partners with Innovations in Textiles 2019, a regional event of over 30 St. Louis area arts venues showcasing exhibitions that explore fiber art, textiles and fashion. Conference activities include a Day of Speakers, with presentations by contemporary thinkers and artists in the field, and a bus tour sampling Innovations exhibitions. Registration for the SDA conference is open to the public. Student discounted fees plus programming available. With Carissa Carman and Yvonne Osei, morning sessions focus on how creative work moves beyond the studio. In SITE Lab, Carman steps outside the artists’ studio to develop innovative works in collaboration with other artists and non-artist affiliations. Through her recent work Who Discovers the Discoverer? Osei will unpack the importance of relying on public spaces to cultivate content and context for art. Afternoon sessions feature side-by-side artist presentations.  Locally Grown, Nationally Known, features Kate Anderson and Basil Kincaid. Making Art, Making a Life, features Hannah O’Hare Bennett and Alaska artist Amy Meissner. Activities include contemporary student and emerging artist work, a mending circle with Catherine Reinhart, and 3 exhibitions: Beyond The Surface, juried by Jo Stealey and Jim Arendt; Small Works, and Future Tense 2019, SDA’s Annual Student Exhibition.  Surface Design Assocation is a 41 year old national organization promoting contemporary textilesFor more information and to register, visit https://www.surfacedesign.org/events-exhibits/conferences/conference2019/.
