Program description:

We are inviting a small group of people (max 5) to learn, experience, and engage with one of the most important holidays in Mexico - Day of the Dead (Dia de Muertos). We will explore “Dia de Muertos” through an interesting duality - its intimate and public rituals - as we explore the history, traditions, rituals, altars, cemetery visits, and street festivities such as Muerteadas and Comparsas. This travel experience will give you a vocabulary of icons, scents, flavors and sounds that you will be able to take in and take with you.

It will take place in 2 locations: Oaxaca City and San Pedros Cajonos, a Zapotec community in the mountains. The programming will be lead by two multidisciplinary artists Scarlett Mizraim and Polina Porras through talks, guided visits, experiences, events and workshops.  Our goal is to provide a structure, an entrance point for understanding how to live this holiday by using creative tools such as journaling, drawing, performance, mask-making, dialogue, dérives, and photography. In San Pedro Cajonos we will learn about the activities that locals engage in preparation leading to the main festivities, an excellent opportunity for reflection to then balance it with the second part of the program in Oaxaca city. In the city of Oaxaca we will experience the festive part of this holiday participating in parades, fairs, and dances. The program has 3 parts: theoretical, practical and experiential, come ready to learn, engage in conversation, make art, keep a journal, open to sensorial experiences and to be part of various communities. The communities that we will part of are probably very different from what you are used to, we ask you to be open and curious yet respectful.
