GERMAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION: CALL FOR SEMINAR PROPOSALS

The 44th GSA Conference in Washington, D.C., from Oct. 1-4, 2020 hosts seminars in addition to panels and roundtables. For general information, see: https://www.thegsa.org/conference

Seminars meet for all 3 days of the conference. They explore new avenues of academic exchange and foster discussion, debate, and networking. Seminars are led by 2-3 conveners (in special cases, even 4) and must consist of a min. of 10 and a max. of 20 participants, including the conveners themselves and auditors. Conveners must aim for diversity and include scholars from different disciplines and at different career stages, including graduate students. Seminars may: discuss an academic publication; explore a new research topic; engage pre-circulated papers; debate scholarly work; develop an anthology; or discuss a specific issue (politics, public policy, novel, film, poem, musical piece, painting, or other work of art). Conveners must structure their seminars around creative and engaging forms of intellectual exchange; lengthy individual presentations are discouraged.

For a detailed list of seminar guidelines and contacts, see: https://www.thegsa.org/blog/call-seminar-proposals-2020

Applying to convene a seminar is a two-step process. First, seminar organizers submit a preliminary proposal consisting of:

a.              title of proposed seminar

b.              names, ranks, and institutional affiliations of conveners

c.              150-words on the seminar’s subject (to be used in the CfP and the printed and online program)

d.              50-words on the seminar’s format (included in the CfP)

e.              200-words on seminar goals and procedures.

These 5 items are due Nov. 22, 2019, by 11:59 pm EST. Submit your application at https://www.xcdsystem.com/gsa. You must be a current member of the GSA to submit a proposal.

The GSA Seminar Committee will provide conveners suggestions for the final submission, due on December 6, 2019, 11:59 pm EST to the same website. The Committee then reviews seminar proposals and posts a list of approved seminars on the GSA website by January 6, 2020. Conveners enlist participants to join the seminar. A call for auditors (observers but not formal participants) will be issued later in the year, once the final conference program has been published.
