The Space Between: Questions of Place in Times of Uncertainty
Type: Exhibition Opportunities [View all]
Posted by: Women's Caucus for Art + Alfa Art Gallery
Deadline: Sat, July 11th, 2020
Our communities have witnessed recent economic uncertainties, shifts in identities, and dramatic transformations in our respective environments. Concerns have centered around our inherent values in relation to our existing living spaces. In the act of inquiry, questions arise: Do we place priority on lifestyle choices in contrast to economic advancement? Is the quality of urban living in a state of decline? Have we contemplated creating new amalgamations of place to bridge gaps between cultures or ethnicities, be they urban, rural, or suburban? Individuals embody complex connections to place or dwelling. Women and underrepresented communities have played a leading role in reflecting on this issue. Sharing our perceptions of place helps to identify our varied responses whilst illuminating our individual and collective relationships to it.
The Women’s Caucus for Art invites all self-identified women artists to challenge prior assumptions on this subject to elicit a diversity of creative response and expression. Readings may involve socio-political or demographic interpretations, phenomenological observations, multisensory investigations, or the mapping, charting, or embodiment of place. Subjective interpretations are encouraged as are representations oriented toward the objective. Two and three-dimensional works and audio-visual installations are welcome.
The juror, Jeanne Brasile, is currently the Director of the Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. She also teaches a practicum on curating to graduate students in the Museum Studies Program and art history at the undergraduate level. Her experience includes working in non-profit museums and galleries for almost twenty years in such venues as The Storm King Art Center, The South Street Seaport Museum, and The Montclair State University Art Galleries.
