Graduate Symposium, In/Accessible

Type: Calls For Papers [View all]
Posted by: Boston University
Deadline: 11/12/12

Please email a 300-word abstract and CV to bugraduatesymposiumhaa@gmail.com by November 12, 2012. Symposium is March 1-2, 2013.

The Boston University Graduate Student Symposium on the History of Art & Architecture invites submissions exploring questions of accessibility of works of art, objects, and the built environment. Some works communicate directly to a broad audience or privilege an exclusive experience; others seem to mediate both poles of this dynamic. In/Accessible seeks to examine those works that make accessibility part of their interpretive structure.

Possible subjects include issues of accessibility in public art and architecture; travel and pilgrimage; mass production; the interface between high and low art. Likewise, papers that address limited accessibility may include esoteric references; ritual objects intended only for the initiated; restricted architectural spaces; secretive artistic alliances; theories of domesticity; and issues of institutional exclusivity.
