Graduate Student Conference Travel Grants

About the Grant

CAA will award a limited number of grants to advanced PhD and MFA graduate students as partial reimbursement of travel expenses to attend the 106th Annual Conference, taking place February 21–24, 2018, in Los Angeles. To qualify for the grant, students must be current CAA members (active between time of application through the conference). Funds are for transportation to and from the conference only, not for meals or lodging. Successful applicants will also receive complimentary conference registration. The deadline for this grant is September 22, 2017.

Grant recipients are chosen by lottery. Depending on the number of applications received, preference will be given to conference attendees not participating as a speaker, chair, or discussant, first-time conference attendees, and/or those traveling from extreme distances. Graduate students living outside the United States may also apply for the CAA International Member Conference Travel Grant but can only receive a single award.

The following application materials must be submitted:

  • A completed application form
  • Shortened CV for applicant (approximately two pages)
  • A one-page statement of no more than 150 words stipulating that the applicant has no external support for travel to the conference
  • A letter of recommendation from the student’s adviser or head of department, division, or school (professional artists may include a letter of recommendation from any professional contact)

Return your completed application and supporting materials to Katie Apsey, CAA manager of programs, by Friday, September 22, 2017. CAA will notify all applicants about their status by mid-November.

CAA reimburses grantees promptly after the conference upon receiving an original airline/bus/train ticket (or eticket) receipt, with the price clearly printed on it. Receipts are due no later than thirty days after the conference. Photocopies, carbons, or boarding passes are not accepted; be sure to make a photocopy or scan of the document for your records before sending the original.

Grant amounts for the 2018 conference will be announced mid-November and are based solely on donations to the Annual Conference Travel Grant fund (see below). In past years, awards have ranged from $150-$500 depending on donations and the number of eligible applicants.

The Annual Conference Travel Grants for graduate-student and international members are funded solely by donations from CAA members—please contribute today. Charitable contributions are 100 percent tax deductible. CAA extends a warm thanks to those members who have made voluntary contributions to this fund.
