Language Acquisition and Contemporary Museum Practice
A jointly edited volume produced by the Gund Gallery at Kenyon College and the Trout Gallery at Dickinson College
The Trout Gallery at Dickinson College and the Gund Gallery at Kenyon College invite scholars, professors and teachers of foreign language, and museum professionals from academic and public museums, in the US and internationally, to submit proposals for an edited volume on ways art museums are developing interdisciplinary collaborations and curricular engagement with art. The final manuscript is scheduled for publication in 2019; it will be 80,000-120,000 words in length, with images in black and white.
In accordance with the publisher’s guidelines, abstracts of chapter proposals must be no more than 200 words in length and may address one or more of the following key topics and issues:
• The special value of encyclopedic collections to language professors
• Faculty seminars for language professors to research and explore museum resources for curricular development
• Critically applying advanced language skills and literary concepts and content through assignments using art objects
• The educational value of practicing foreign language speech in front of works of art
• Writing assignments inspired by works of art
• Non-art museums and collections used by language faculty
• Data on vocabulary acquisition linked to museum engagement
• K-12 language education and museums
• Incentives for faculty engagement
• Student translations and original writing for museum labels, brochures, and educational materials
• Student-led foreign language tours of exhibitions

Provisional schedule:
January 31, 2019: authors notified of acceptance
February 15, 2019: text proposal reviewed by the publisher
June 30, 2019: authors submit final papers
August 15, 2019: completed manuscript sent to publisher
