20/20 Exhibition | Momentum 

Summary 
The Arts Commission invites artists with residence or holding a creative studio within 25 miles of downtown Toledo, Ohio and those who have previously resided in the Toledo area to apply for an online exhibition as part of the Momentum Festival. This exhibition will include twenty artists currently living in the Toledo area and twenty artists with ties to Toledo.

Launched in 2017, Momentum has been presented as a three-day festival of music and art along the Maumee riverfront to celebrate revitalization in downtown Toledo through the arts. The Momentum festival supports local artists and musicians and invites international creatives to perform and exhibit in Toledo. For the last three years the Momentum festival has brought dynamic interactive and accessible programming to tens of thousands of attendees.

In 2020, Momentum will be shifting to a combination of virtual and discoverable elements to safely engage attendees in arts and culture experiences in response to COVID-19 and restricted public gathering. Momentum activity will kick off on September 17th in downtown Toledo and continue through mid-October. Through a blend of safe and separate virtual experiences and artwork that improves public spaces we will “keep the momentum going” during the pandemic.

Exhibiting artists will be invited to host online studio tours, artist talks, and round table discussions to engage the public in a deeper understanding of their work. 

Curators
Lauren Applebaum, PhD joined the Toledo Museum of Art in 2018 as a leadership fellow. She brings over a decade of museum and art world experience to this position, which aims to cultivate membership of the next generation of museum leaders by providing direct experience in strategic planning, curatorial and program leadership, board engagement, donor stewardship, financial and resource management, policy development, and community engagement. Prior to accepting this position, Applebaum was the GSK curatorial fellow in American art at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh (NCMA), where she participated in significant museum exhibitions, acquisitions, and collection building projects.

Applebaum received her B.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder, her M.A. in art history at Hunter College, CUNY, and her Ph.D. in art history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her doctoral research on the intersection between art and social technologies in the nineteenth century was supported by fellowships at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Huntington Library (Calif.), the Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. In addition to her academic and museum fellowship positions, she also worked in New York City, both in art advisory and gallery roles, and in the executive office at Christie’s.

Jova Lynne is a transdisciplinary artist and curator based out of Detroit, MI. Lynne is a grantee of the Astraea Foundation’s Global Arts Fund, which has supported her work in media and social practice based projects in Kingston, Jamaica and Berlin, Germany in addition to her work in Detroit. Lynne completed a Masters of Fine Arts in Photography at Cranbrook Academy of Art in May 2017. Since then Lynne has served as a curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit where she put together exhibitions that highlighted regional and international artists, in addition to independent curation across the United States.

Alex Paik is an artist living and working in Brooklyn. His modular, paper-based wall installations explore perception, interdependence, and improvisation within structure while engaging with the complexities of social dynamics. He has exhibited in the U.S. and internationally, with notable solo projects at Praxis New York, Art on Paper 2016, and Gallery Joe. His work has also been featured in group exhibitions at BravinLee Projects, Lesley Heller Workspace, and MONO Practice, among others. Paik is Founder and Director of Tiger Strikes Asteroid, a non-profit network of artist-run spaces and Director at Trestle Gallery. He was also the curator of the Satellite Art Show in Miami from 2015 to 2018.

Eligibility

The call for artwork is open to any artists ages 18 and older who are currently living or holding a creative studio within 25 miles of Toledo, OH or those who have lived in the greater Toledo area previously regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical or mental disability. 

All entries must be original. No copies of artworks or reproductions will be accepted. The Arts Commission reserves the right to refuse any work.

Who is NOT eligible to apply? Artists currently employed by The Arts Commission or serving as members of The Arts Commission’s Board of Trustees are NOT eligible to apply for exhibition. 

Submission Instructions / Entry Procedure
Please follow these instructions to be considered for the exhibition and submit the following information:

● Curriculum Vitae or Resume (two pages maximum)
●  Artist Bio (150 words maximum)
●  Artist Statement (300 words maximum)
● Up to three works of art; Files should be labeled LastName_FirstName_WorkSample1 (example: Smith_Max_WorkSample1.jpg) and should be 1000 pixels for the largest dimension
