Artist-in-Residence (AIR)

The Cheekwood Martin Shallenberger Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Series is an initiative focused on bringing innovative, dynamic, and intriguing artists to the city of Nashville, Tennessee, for a coveted opportunity to produce an interpretive site-specific exhibition at one of the city’s leading art institution and botanical gardens, Cheekwood. The AIR series invites an artist to create on the estate for a full month (four weeks) and presents them an opportunity to display their works in an indoor and/or outdoor exhibition.

Artists are expected to create onsite for their four-week residency responding to the Cheekwood environment. Throughout the residency, the artist will be offered an environment or studio space in which they are able to work. All artist materials will be provided, and artists are expected to interact with the public and partake in scheduled educational programming. Works produced will be installed with the assistance of the Cheekwood curatorial staff.

How to Apply

Interested artists may send a CV, a letter of intent, an artist statement, and a portfolio of 15-20 recent and representative works to hmorgan@cheekwood.org by the deadline. All inquires about the program may also be directed at this email address. 

Additional Information

Artist will receive an hororarium, meal stipend, and intital travel to and from Cheekwood at the beginning and end of the residency. House and material costs are provided. The residency will take place in October 2023.

About Cheekwood

Cheekwood is a historic estate and gardens that were designed by Bryant Flemming and built by Mable and Leslie Cheek, Sr. between 1929 and 1932 in Nashville, Tennessee. Given in 1958 as a public insitiution for fine art and botanical gardens, Cheekwood today consists of 55-acres of gardens, Modern and contemporary scuplutre trail, and a British inspired mansion with period rooms and art galleries containing Aermican and British furniture, decorative arts, and American painting and sculpture.
