Calls For Papers

Book Review Commissions for Visual Studies Journal

Type: Calls For Papers [View all]
Posted by: International Visual Sociology Association
Deadline: Thu, December 15th, 2022

Visual Studies is currently soliciting two types of book reviews: thematic reviews and traditional reviews. Please see the details below and feel free to circulate this among your colleagues and doctoral students.

Thematic Reviews:

The word limit would be 2,500-3,000. Like all reviews, the format varies, however, the expectation with a longer, thematic submission is that the author situates their knowledge and expertise at the center of the submission and weaves an authoritative narrative between the texts, often around/in reference to their work and ideas, while also remembering that it is a review and highlighting key aspects and themes or similarities. We are open to you including materials such as art exhibitions and films to enrich the submission.

Some examples of what this could be:

Review of multiple new academic texts that deeply engage with a common artwork or key event

Review of recent texts that bring new perspectives to and are deeply influenced by less recent seminal texts

Reviews of reissued or newly translated texts, offering a deep contextualization of their significance to the discipline

Traditional Reviews:

Individual book review lengths (500-750 words / 1000-1250 words) will be assigned when a reviewer is accepted for an assignment.

Please be in touch with me if you are interested in submitting either format.

To Submit

If you or qualified colleagues wish to receive one (or more) of these books for purpose of writing a review, please contact me, Kate Korroch (kkorroch@ucsc.edu), and provide the following information:

- name and affiliation;
- your best book-mailing address and e-book emailing address;
- the book(s) you wish to review;
- 2-3 sentences describing your qualifications and/or reasons for wanting to review the selected title (e.g. your previous scholarship, current interests, publications and the like).

Here is a list of books but keep in mind, this list is just a start and we are also open to publishing reviews of texts that are not on this list.
