On Repair and the Arts

Carolyn Butler Palmer, Art History and Visual Studies, University of Victoria, cbpalmer@uvic.ca
Yvonne Tiger, MacEwan University

Panel Session | Session de panel

The idea of repair is often linked to an ideal of restoration to completeness. For example, a repair can mean mending an object and restoring it to a state of wholeness. Repair can also mean returning to a homeland, the end of an interrupted journey. Kintsugi, the Japanese art form of combining pieces of broken ceramics with gold, calls attention to the beauty of fractures and imperfections and provokes us to think of our mistakes and frailties. Yet, the related notion of reparations emphasizes compensation for damages or is part of a process of making amends for many forms of injustices and wrong doings. We solicit papers that critically examine concepts and practices of repair, delve into questions about what is repairable, or probe ideas of reparation in relationship to the visual arts, curating, design, and film in any geographic region and period.

Keywords: mending, amends, Kintsugi, wholeness, fractures
