SUBMIT A PROPOSAL TO THE ART BULLETIN
The Art Bulletin welcomes submissions from scholars worldwide and at any stage in their careers. To facilitate the process, CAA has prepared guidelines for submitting a manuscript for consideration.
MANUSCRIPT TEXT AND IMAGES
Manuscripts must be in English and must not have been previously published in print or online. The Art Bulletin publishes articles up to 16,000 words in length, with a maximum word count of 16,000, including endnotes. Articles should be accompanied by a Microsoft Word file no larger than 10 MB containing all illustrations with a maximum of 20 images and captions, a separate Microsoft Word file with just the captions, a cover sheet with a biographical statement of no more than 50 words, and an abstract of no more than 100 words.
Due to the strict nature of the double-blind peer-review process, it is essential to remove any information that would identify you as the author, both from your text and from the notes. The author’s name should appear only on the separate cover sheet, along with contact information. The title of the article, but not the author’s name, should be repeated on the first page of the text.
Please note that images must be received in a Microsoft Word file, not as individual JPEG or TIFF files. If the Word file containing the illustrations is larger than 10 MB, CAA is unable to send it to the peer reviewers, since many institutional firewalls block files larger than 10 MB. (As a courtesy to its peer reviewers, CAA does not send massive files via large-file transfer services.)
Photographs and scans of all images (with caption information) should be in the author’s possession when a manuscript is submitted for consideration. If the manuscript is accepted, the author will need to supply high-resolution images promptly. CAA encourages authors to employ fair use for third-party works in copyright according to the principles and limitations outlined in CAA’s Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for the Visual Arts. It is the responsibility of the author to determine whether fair use may be invoked for third-party materials (authors will still need to obtain permission for third-party works that are not utilized under fair use and pay all reproduction fees). Please see CAA’s resources on Fair Use and Images Sources and Rights Clearance Agencies for more. Any documents granting permission should be kept by the author, who will provide copies when submitting final materials for publication to the editorial assistant.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION CHECKLIST
The Art Bulletin does not accept hard-copy submissions. All submissions must be sent electronically, either via email or a large-file transfer service. All files must be in Microsoft Word. CAA does not accept PDFs since these files cannot be altered to preserve anonymity (which is necessary if the manuscript moves to the peer-review stage).
Please submit manuscripts to:
