CAA Begins Its Centennial Campaign
posted by Nia Page — November 16, 2010
The year 2011 marks the College Art Association’s one-hundredth anniversary, a celebratory landmark for any organization but particularly so given CAA’s dynamic influence in shaping the study and practice of the visual arts. Without dedicated members like you, CAA would not be where it is today. You can continue demonstrating your loyal support with a contribution to the new Centennial Campaign, which begins this week.
Since 1911, CAA has led many progressive developments in the art and academic worlds. In the 1920s, the organization helped establish art history as a legitimate subject in the humanities, and during the Great Depression it was instrumental in the Federal Arts Project of the Works Progress Administration. A 1960s statement declaring the MFA as the terminal degree for artists led to a robust Standards and Guidelines program in the next decade, and the Culture Wars of the 1980s and 1990s spurred CAA to take a firm stance supporting the First Amendment. The past ten years have been the busiest, with a small, dedicated staff administering a wide range of programs—from book grants and graduate-student fellowships to intellectual-property assistance and advocacy for contingent faculty—while continuing to publish distinguished journals and produce the largest international conference in the visual arts.
The Centennial is a time to think about CAA’s future. Earlier this year, the Board of Directors unveiled a new strategic plan, based on feedback from members, that identifies core goals and objectives for the next five years. Priorities include increasing support to artists, bringing designers into our circle, enhancing international outreach, and stepping up advocacy efforts—all of which allows the organization to strengthen its vital presence throughout the field.
CAA will kick off its Centennial celebration in New York at the 99th Annual Conference, to be held February 9–12, 2011. A variety of programs and events will complement the usual conference format, including a special awards ceremony and reception at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a public-art project in Times Square, sessions that bring together well-known figures for passionate cross-disciplinary exchange, and a toast to CAA’s anniversary at the Annual Members’ Business Meeting.
CAA remains dedicated to serving professionals and students in the visual arts, but it needs your assistance. Contributions to the Centennial Campaign at every level make a difference; they are also fully tax deductible. Your gift will not only sustain the organization now, but it will also help guarantee CAA’s leadership for the next one hundred years.

CAA Wraps Its 98th Annual Conference in Chicago
posted by Nia Page — February 24, 2010
The College Art Association (CAA) hosted its 98th Annual Conference in Chicago, February 10–13, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. The program included three days of presentations and panel discussions on art history and visual culture; career-development workshops, mentoring programs, and job interviews with colleges and universities; a Book and Trade Fair of academic and trade art publishers and artist-materials distributors; and a host of special events throughout the Chicago area.
Here are some conference highlights.

Sessions
Conference sessions featured presentations from art-history scholars, graduate students, artists, and curators from institutions across the country and internationally. Conference sessions address a range of topics in art history and the visual arts. In total, over 150 sessions, developed by CAA members, affiliated societies, and committees, were offered.

The Book and Trade Fair also featured book signings, lectures, and art-materials demonstrations, as well as three exhibitor-sponsored program sessions on art materials and publishing.
ARTspace and ARTexchange
ARTspace, a “conference within the conference” tailored to the needs and interests of practicing artists, presented this year’s Annual Artists’ Interviews: Tony Tasset was interviewed by John Neff, and Phyllis Bramson was interviewed by Lynn Warren. Over 150 people attended this extraordinary event. Programmed by CAA’s Services to Artists Committee, ARTspace was made possible in part by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Update Your Profile Information for the CAA Online Member Directory
posted by Nia Page — February 23, 2010
Available soon to current individual CAA members, the online Member Directory will allow you to search for other individual members based on name and address; organization; and city, state, and country.
Before the directory is launched in early March, CAA encourages you to log into your CAA account to review and update all of your contact information, including information that will appear in the Member Directory. This is a good time to remove duplicate or outdated information.
If you have more than one valid address on your record, you may choose which address to include in the directory. Organization and title will only be included with a business address. In addition, only your primary phone, email, and/or website address will be used regardless of which address you choose.
After logging into your CAA account, click the “Contact Info” link on the left side to review your contact information. Instructions on the page will help you choose an address for the Member Directory.
You may prevent any information from appearing in the directory by unmarking all addresses on your record.

Renew Your CAA Membership
posted by Nia Page — December 15, 2008
CAA renews memberships on a rolling basis, much like a magazine subscription. However, because the previous renewal schedule before 2005 was based on the calendar year, many current individual and institutional memberships expire on December 31, 2008. Your access to essential online resources, printed materials, and journals, and to the 2009 Board of Directors election, is available only with a current membership.
In addition, special conference-registration discounts apply only to CAA members. The early registration deadline is December 19, 2008. Don’t miss out on these great savings—be sure your membership is current.
It’s easy to check your membership status or to renew your membership online: click on “Account Log In” at the upper right of this webpage; you can gain access to your profile with your CAA member number (located on your membership card or mailing address label) and password. Your preset password is included in your membership packet.
If you have forgotten your member number or password, please contact CAA’s Member Services at memsvcs@collegeart.org or by fax at 212-627-2381. You may also call 212-691-1051, ext. 12, during our office hours: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM EST.
