Academe

Adair Rounthwaite has been appointed assistant professor of art history in the School of Art, Art History, and Design at the University of Washington in Seattle. The position is tenure track.

Michael Schreffler, formerly a faculty member in the Department of Art History at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, has joined the Department of Art, Art History, and Design at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana as associate professor of the art and architecture of Spain and Latin America in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Museums and Galleries

Cassandra Albinson has been appointed the new Margaret S. Winthrop Curator of European Art at the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Christopher Atkins, coordinator of the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program at the Minneapolis Institute of Art since 2009, has joined the Minnesota Museum of American Art in Saint Paul as curator of exhibitions and public programs.

Ethan Lasser has been named head of the Division of European and American Art at the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was also promoted to Theodore E. Stebbins Jr. Curator of American Art—the first person to hold this endowed position.

Anne Manning, formerly deputy director for education and interpretation at the Baltimore Museum of Art in Maryland, has been appointed director of education and interpretive programs at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri.

James Meyer, associate curator for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, has been hired to serve as deputy director and chief curator of the Dia Art Foundation in New York.

Leslee Katrina Michelsen has left her position as head of curatorial research for the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. She is now a curatorial consultant for UNESCO Afghanistan.

Peter Nesbett, formerly associate director for programs at the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has been appointed executive director of the Washington Project for the Arts in Washington, DC.

Stephen Pinson, formerly Robert B. Menschel Curator of Photography for the New York Public Library, has joined the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as curator of photography.

Elizabeth M. Rudy, who has been with the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts, since 2011, has been named the new Carl A. Weyerhaeuser Associate Curator of Prints.

Rachel Saunders has been named Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Associate Curator of Asian Art in the Division of Asian and Mediterranean Art at the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is the first to hold this endowed position.

Emily Stamey, previously curator of contemporary art at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona, has become curator of exhibitions at the University of North Carolina’s Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro.

Elizabeth Varner has left her position as executive director of the National Art Museum of Sport in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is now staff curator at US Department of the Interior in Washington, DC.

Aileen June Wang has joined the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, part of Kansas State University in Manhattan, as associate curator. Prior to the appointment she was assistant professor of art history at Long Island University Post in Brookville, New York.

Gregory Wittkopp, director of the Cranbrook Art Museum and the Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research, both in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, since 2011, has stepped down from the museum position. He will continue to lead the center.

Organizations and Publications

Tanya Sheehan, associate professor of art and chair of the Art Department at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, has been appointed guest editor of the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art Journal.

Nicole Awai has joined the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin as assistant professor in painting and drawing.

Douglas Brine, assistant professor in the Department of Art and Art History at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, has received tenure.

Anne Helmreich, formerly senior program officer for the Getty Foundation in Los Angeles, California, has been named dean of the College of Fine Arts at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.

Adrian Randolph, Leon E. Williams Professor of Art History and associate dean of the faculty for the arts and humanities at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, has been appointed dean of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Marissa Vigneault has left the University of Nebraska in Lincoln to become assistant professor of art history at Utah State University in Logan.

Greg Watts, formerly professor and chair of the Art Department and executive director of the Center for Visual Art at Metropolitan State University in Denver, Colorado, has become dean of the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas in Denton.

Catherine Zuromskis has become assistant professor of photographic arts and sciences in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology in Henrietta, New York.

Museums and Galleries

Leslie Anderson-Perkins has joined the Utah Museum of Fine Arts at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City as curator of European, American, and regional art. Previously she was curatorial assistant for European and American painting, sculpture, and works on paper at the Indianapolis Museum of Art in Indiana.

Seb Chan, director of digital and emerging media at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, has become the inaugural chief experience officer at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne.

Shawnya L. Harris has become the first Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson Curator of African American and African Diasporic Art for the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia in Athens. Previously Harris taught at the Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

Claire Henry, senior curatorial assistant of the Andy Warhol Film Project at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, has been promoted to assistant curator at the museum.

Maureen Warren has been appointed curator of European and American art at the University of Illinois’s Krannert Art Museum in Champaign. She was previously Andrew W. Mellon Curatorial Research Fellow in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Jennifer A. Greenhill has left the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign to become associate professor of art history at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Jennifer Dorothy Lee has joined the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois as assistant professor.

Kent Minturn, director of the master’s degree program in modern art at Columbia University in New York, has joined New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts as visiting assistant professor.

Museums and Galleries

William J. Chiego, director of the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas, since 1991, has announced his resignation, effective September 30, 2016.

Erin B. Coe has been appointed director of the Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, New York.

Philippe de Montebello, director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1977 to 2008, has been named chair of the Hispanic Society Museum in New York.

Katherine de Vos Devine has been chosen to lead the Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center in Asheville, North Carolina, as director.

John Jacob has joined the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, as McEvoy Family Curator for Photography.

Claire L. Kovacs, assistant professor of art history at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, has become director of the Augustana Teaching Museum of Art at Augstana College in Rock Island, Illinois.

Sarah Montross, formerly Andrew W. Mellon postdoctoral curatorial fellow at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in Brunswick, Maine, has become the new associate curator for the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts.

Maura Reilly, formerly adjunct professor at the Sydney College of the Arts in Australia, has been appointed chief curator of the National Academy Museum in New York.

Timothy Rodgers, formerly director of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona, has been named director of the Wolfsonian–Florida International University in Miami Beach, Florida.

Michael R. Taylor, formerly director of Dartmouth University’s Hood Museum of Art in Hanover, New Hampshire, has joined the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond as chief curator and deputy director for art and education.

Alison Weaver has become executive director of the Moody Center for the Arts in Houston, Texas. The center is scheduled to open in September 2016.

Jan Wurm has been appointed director of exhibitions at the Richmond Art Center in Richmond, California.

Organizations and Publications

Christopher P. Heuer, Samuel H. Kress Senior Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, has become associate director of research and academic programs at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Tony White, associate chief librarian for reader services at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, has joined the board of directors of the Center for Book Arts, also in New York.

Raymond Allen, a painter, professor, and longtime vice president of academic affairs and provost at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, will retire in June 2015.

Leslie Bellavance, currently dean, director of graduate programs, and professor in the School of Art and Design at Alfred University’s New York State College of Ceramics, has been named president of Kendall College of Art and Design at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. Her appointment begins on July 1, 2015.

Susan Best has become convenor of fine art and art theory in the Queensland College of Art at Griffith University in South Brisbane, Australia.

David Bogen, currently vice president academic and provost at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, British Columbia, has been appointed provost and vice president of academic affairs at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, effective August 2015.

Tanya Sheehan, associate professor of art at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, has earned tenure at her school.

Museums and Galleries

Margaret C. Conrads, formerly deputy director of art and research at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas, has been appointed director of curatorial affairs at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Anne Hawley, director of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachussetts, has announced her retirement after twenty-five years of service. She will step down at the end of 2015.

Katherine Jentleson, a doctoral candidate in art history at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, has been appointed the inaugural Merrie and Dan Boone Curator of Folk and Self-Taught Art at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia.

David Joselit, distinguished professor of art history at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, has joined the board of directors of Artists Space in Manhattan.

Narayan Khandekar, senior conservation scientist in the Harvard Art Museums’ Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has become the center’s director.

Thomas Kren, associate director for collections at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California, will retire from his position in October 2015.

Kate Kunau, a doctoral candidate in the School of Art and Art History at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, has become associate curator at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Jeongho Park, formerly Anne L. Poulet Curatorial Fellow at the Frick Collection in New York, has become curatorial research associate for the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Blanton Museum of Art, part of the University of Texas at Austin.

Lowery Stokes Sims, chief curator of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, has retired from the museum.

David Stark, previously director of administration for museum education at the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois, has been appointed chief curator of the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio.

Michael Taylor has left his position as director of Dartmouth University’s Hood Museum of Art in Hanover, New Hampshire.

Daniel H. Weiss, an art historian and president of Haverford College in Haverford, Pennsylvania, has been named president of the board of trustees at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Chris Yates, formerly director of CORE Studio and associate professor of art at the Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio, has become assistant director of Gund Gallery at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.

Michael Conforti, director of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts, has announced his retirement. He will leave the institute in summer 2015.

Elissa Auther, associate professor of contemporary art and director of the art-history and museum-studies program at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, has joined the Museum of Arts and Design in New York as the inaugural Wingate Research Curator. She will hold a joint appointment at the Bard Graduate Center, in collaboration with the Center for Craft, Creativity, and Design.

Robert C. Hobbs, Rhoda Thalhimer Endowed Chair at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and visiting professor at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, has been inducted as a trustee of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut.

Organizations and Publications

Dena Muller has been appointed executive director of the Cue Art Foundation in New York. Previously she had served the New York Foundation for the Arts as director of new initiatives.

Edith Balas has retired after thirty-five years of teaching art history at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Jeff Bellantoni, formerly chairperson and professor of the Graduate Communications Design Department at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, has been appointed vice president for academic affairs at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida.

Lori Cole, formerly the Charlotte Zysman Postdoctoral Fellow in the Humanities and Lecturer in Fine Arts at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, has become assistant professor and faculty fellow at the John W. Draper Interdisciplinary Master’s Program in Humanities and Social Thought at New York University.

Ryan Hoover has been appointed a 2014–15 full-time faculty member in the Interdisciplinary Sculpture Department at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.

Christian Luczanits, senior curator at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York, has been named David L. Snellgrove Senior Lecturer in Tibetan and Buddhist Art at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies in England.

Kiel Mutschelknaus has joined Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore as a full-time faculty member in graphic design for the 2014–15 academic year.

David Raskin has been named Mohn Family Professor of Contemporary Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois, thanks to a recent $2.5 million gift from the Mohn Family Foundation.

Daniel Tucker has been appointed graduate-program manager in social and studio practice at the Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Carol Damian has stepped down as director and chief curator of the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University in Miami. She will serve as a professor in the school’s Art and Art History Department.

Tracy Fitzpatrick, chief curator of the Neuberger Museum of Art at Purchase College, State University of New York, has been appointed director of the museum.

Meredith Fluke has been appointed Kemper Curator of Academic Programs at the Davis Museum at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

Aimeé E. Froom, an independent scholar based in Paris, France, has become curator of Islamic art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in Texas.

Erika Holmquist-Wall, formerly of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minnesota, has been hired by the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky, as curator of European and American painting and sculpture.

Monica Obniski, formerly assistant curator of American decorative arts at the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois, has been hired by the Milwaukee Art Museum in Wisconsin as curator of design and decorative arts.

Amy L. Powell, previously a Cynthia Woods Mitchell Curatorial Fellow at the University of Houston’s in Texas, has become curator of modern and contemporary art at the Krannert Art Museum, part of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Namita Gupta Wiggers has resigned from being director and chief curator for the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, Oregon. She will continue working with the museum as an adjunct curator and with Pacific Northwest College of Art as an adjunct instructor in the MFA Applied Craft and Design Program.

Scott Wilcox, chief curator of art collections and senior curator of prints and drawings at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut, has been promoted to deputy director for collections.

Organizations and Publications

Richard Brettell has been chosen to lead the newly created Edith O’Donnell Institute of Art History in Dallas, Texas, as director and Edith O’Donnell Distinguished Chair.

Paul Catanese, associate professor and director of the Interdisciplinary Arts and Media MFA Program at Columbia College Chicago in Illinois, has joined the ISEA International Foundation Board.

Kathryn Maxwell has been appointed acting director of the Herberger Institute School for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University in Tempe.

Judith Rodenbeck, professor of modern and contemporary art at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, has accepted a position on the faculty of the Department of Media and Cultural Studies at the University of California, Riverside, for the 2014–15 academic year.

Ashley Thompson, formerly senior lecturer in the School of Fine Art at Leeds University in England, has become professor and Hiram W. Woodward Chair in Southeast Asian Art in the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies.

Esther Bell, formerly curator of European paintings, drawings, and sculpture at the Cincinnati Art Museum in Ohio, has become the new curator in charge of European paintings at the Fine Arts Museum in San Francisco, California.

Kate Ezra has left her position as Nolen Curator of Education and Academic Affairs at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut.

Erika Holmquist-Wall, formerly assistant curator of paintings at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minnestoa, has been named Mary and Barry Bingham Sr. Curator of European and American Painting and Sculpture at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky.

Ted Mann, formerly assistant curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, has become a San Francisco–based consulting curator for the museum’s Panza Collection.

Virginia Reynolds, curatorial assistant for the Detroit Institute of Arts in Michigan, has left her position at the museum.

Kailin Weng has left her position at Chinese art project manager at the Smithsonian Institution’s Freer and Sackler Galleries in Washington, DC. She is now a graduate student at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Patrick Hajovsky, an assistant professor of art history who specializes in Precolumbian and colonial Latin American art, has earned tenure in the Art and Art History Department at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.

Seth Kim-Cohen has been appointed assistant professor of contemporary art history in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois.

Elena FitzPatrick Sifford has accepted the position of assistant professor of Renaissance and Baroque art at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

Mechtild Widrich has joined the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois as assistant professor of contemporary art history.

Gregory Williams, associate professor of contemporary art at Boston University in Massachusetts, has received tenure in his school’s Department of History of Art and Architecture.

Museums and Galleries

Paul R. Davis, previously Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for the Creative Arts of Africa at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, has been appointed curator of collections at the Menil Collection in Houston, Texas.

Douglas Dreishpoon has become the first chief curator emeritus at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, where he has worked since 1998.

Christine Neilsen, formerly assistant curator of late antique and Byzantine art for the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois, has been named William and Lia Poorvu Curator of the Collection and Director of Program Planning at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts.

David Odo has left his position as Bradley Assistant Curator of Academic Affairsat the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut. He is now director of student programs and research curator of university collections initiatives at the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Brandon Ruud, previously curator of American art for the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, has been named the new Constance and Dudley J. Godfrey Jr. Curator of American Art and Decorative Arts at the Milwaukee Art Museum in Wisconsin.

Jill Shaw, a research associate at the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois, has accepted the position of senior curator of collections at Colgate University’s Picker Art Gallery in Hamilton, New York.

Organizations and Publications

Parme Giuntini, professor of art history and assistant chair of liberal arts and sciences at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, California, has become a contributing editor to the website Art History Teaching Resources.

Kimberly James Overdevest, assistant professor of visual arts at Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan, has joined the website Art History Teaching Resources as a contributing editor.

Virginia Spivey, an independent art historian based in Washington, DC, has become a contributing editor to the website Art History Teaching Resources.

Darby English, director of research and academic programming at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts, has been appointed consulting curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He will retain his position at the Clark.

Sandra Q. Firmin, curator of the UB Art Galleries at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, has accepted the directorship of the CU Art Museum at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

David Rubin has left his curatorial position at the San Antonio Museum of Art in San Antonio, Texas.

Jill Deupi has joined the board of directors of the Association of Art Museums and Galleries as its New England representative.

Jessi DiTillio has been appointed interim administrative director of the Association of Art Museums and Galleries.
