SUBMIT A PROPOSAL TO ART JOURNAL

Art Journal welcomes submissions of essays, features, interviews, forums, and other projects concerning modern and contemporary art from authors and artists worldwide and at any career stage. Except in extraordinary circumstances, previously published material is ineligible for consideration.

Manuscript TEXT AND IMAGES

Submissions to Art Journal may be in any language and must not have been previously published in print or online. Art Journal publishes articles up to a maximum of 8,000 words in length, including notes. Submissions over 8,000 words will be returned to the author. Please be aware that texts significantly below the 8,000-word limit are encouraged. Articles should be accompanied by a list of illustrations (captions), a Microsoft Word file no larger than 10 MB containing all illustrations with a maximum of 20 images and captions, a cover sheet with a biographical statement of no more than 60 words, and a 250-word abstract in English.

To preserve the integrity of the double-blind peer review process, it is imperative that you ensure that all references that might identify you in the body of the text itself or in the footnotes are removed. Please be extra vigilant about this matter, because if a text becomes compromised during the double-blind peer review process (and the author’s name becomes known to a reviewer), we may be obliged to terminate consideration of the text.

Please note that images must be received in a Microsoft Word file, not as individual JPEG or TIFF files. If the Word file containing the illustrations is larger than 10 MB, CAA is unable to send it to the peer reviewers, since many institutional firewalls block files larger than 10 MB. (As a courtesy to its peer reviewers, CAA does not send massive files via large-file transfer services.)

Photographs and scans of all images (with caption information) should be in the author’s possession when a manuscript is submitted for consideration. If the manuscript is accepted, the author will need to supply high-resolution images promptly. CAA encourages authors to employ fair use for third-party works in copyright according to the principles and limitations outlined in CAA’s Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for the Visual Arts. It is the responsibility of the author to determine whether fair use may be invoked for third-party materials (authors will still need to obtain permission for third-party works that are not utilized under fair use and pay all reproduction fees). Please see CAA’s resources on Fair Use and Images Sources and Rights Clearance Agencies for more. Any documents granting permission should be kept by the author, who will provide copies when submitting final materials for publication to the editorial assistant.

REVIEWS

All reviews for Art Journal are commissioned. Art Journal adheres to CAA’s Guidelines for Conflict of Interest and does not accept unsolicited reviews. Please submit inquiries, letters about published reviews, and commissioned reviews by email to:

Balbir K. Singh
Reviews Editor, Art Journal
balbir.k.singh@concordia.ca

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION CHECKLIST

Art Journal does not accept hard-copy submissions. All submissions must be sent electronically, either via email or a large-file transfer service. All files must be in Microsoft Word. CAA does not accept PDFs since these files cannot be altered to preserve anonymity (which is necessary if the manuscript moves to the peer-review stage).

Please submit manuscripts and proposals for artists’ projects to:

Derek Murray
Editor-in-Chief of Art Journal
art.journal.editor@collegeart.org.

All article submissions must be in Microsoft Word, 12-point Times New Roman font, and double spaced, and must include:

  • A cover sheet with the author’s name, a 60-word biographical statement, postal and email addresses, telephone and fax number(s), and the entire submission’s word count, including notes and other elements
  • A 250-word abstract of the article
  • The article, which should not mention the author’s name (please do not include a bibliography). Maximum of 8,000 words, including notes.
  • An illustration list (captions) with a maximum of 20 figures. Please note that each individual image file counts as one figure. Art Journal cannot accommodate multi-image figures.
  • A Word file no larger than 10 MB containing all images and captions.

ARTIST’S PROJECT PROPOSALS

Proposals for an artist’s project or portfolio should comprise a one-page written description, 10–20 sample images or other media (with complete caption information), and a short artist bio. If an original artwork for Art Journal is proposed, please send samples of comparable work. Include details of medium and format (with complete caption information).
