The James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History, Wayne State University (WSU), Detroit, MI, and 333 Midland presents a call for entries for the 2017 SculptureX Symposium Student Exhibition. The exhibition dates are October 13 through October 29, 2017.
The exhibition coincides with the 2017 SculptureX Symposium, hosted by the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History, WSU, and co-sponsored by Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum, Saginaw Valley State University. The symposium dates are October 13 and 14, 2017. A reception for the exhibition will be held at the Annex Gallery on October 13 from 6-11 p.m.
Submissions will be juried by Dr. Indra Lācis, Director of Exhibitions, Richmond Center for Visual Arts, Western Michigan University.
ABOUT THE 2017 SCULPTUREX SYMPOSIUM STUDENT EXHIBITION JUROR
Dr. Indra Lācis is a curator and art historian. She currently serves as Director of Exhibitions at Western Michigan University’s Richmond Center for Visual Arts. Prior to her work leading the Richmond Center’s exhibitions program, Lācis held curatorial and research positions at such institutions as the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, and SPACES, an alternative exhibition gallery committed to artists who experiment. In addition to curating half a dozen museum exhibitions featuring a range of artists —from Hank Willis Thomas to Julian Stanczak, Xaviera Simmons, and William Pope.L— Lācis has organized solo, group, participatory, and pop-up exhibitions at a variety of Cleveland venues including Zygote Press, The Cleveland Foundation, The Sculpture Center, and 78th Street Studios.
Dr. Lācis earned her PhD in modern and contemporary art from Case Western Reserve.
ELIGIBILITY
This call is open to all undergraduate and graduate students working in the areas of sculpture and extended media, and who are18 years of age or older.
CONDITIONSAll work must be installation ready, with all hardware and installation instructions included.
Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to submit 3-dimensional work that can fit through a 6’ by 8’ door and two-dimensional work with a maximum size of 48” in any direction. Video submissions must be in MP4 format.
All accepted video works will be presented on flat screen monitors provided by WSU. Video projections won’t be accepted.
A maximum of THREE entries per artist are permitted. Two views of each work are allowed (second views and detail shots mustbe clearly labeled as VIEW#2 or DETAIL). Artists may not substitute another work for an accepted work, alter a work, norwithdraw a work after it has been accepted. Symposium organizers and the Annex Gallery reserves the right to refuse any entrywhich does not match the images submitted or meet the criteria. Symposium organizers and the Annex Gallery reserves theright to refuse work that is not appropriate for the space.
When uploading entry attachments, label each attachment as follows: Last name, first name _ Entry 1 (2 or 3) For second views or details add appropriate info (i.e. last name, First name_entry1_View2)
ENTRY FEE: $15 LIMIT THREE WORKS
SALES: 333 Midland retains a 25% commission on all gallery retail sales. Any artwork designated Not for Sale (NFS) must provide value upon entry for insurance pruposes. The price submitted is the retail price.
ACCEPTED WORKS
Works can be hand delivered or shipped. Instructions will be included in the notification e-mail letter. The artist entrant will be responsible for all shipping charges for both directions. Artists who ship their works must provide prepaid return labels upon delivery. Every precaution will be taken to handle artwork with the utmost care. However, the Annex Gallery and Wayne State University will not be responsible for damage or loss from any cause.
NOTIFICATIONNotification of accepted and non-accepted works will be sent via email on September 25, 2017.
