Type: Residencies, Workshops, Exchanges [View all]
Posted by: Athena Standards Residency
Deadline: Mon, December 31st, 2018

The Athena Standards Residency is open year round, with residency periods of one to twelve months. We are currently accepting applications for all sessions May 2018- January 2019, on a rolling basis. The cost of the residency program is 1500 Euro for a one month period. Artists that choose to stay for more than one month receive a discounted rate of 10% off the second and third consecutive months and 20% off the fourth and subsequent months. We encourage artists to consider staying more than one month in order to gain a deeper understanding of Athens as a cultural hub.

The application process is free and open to all. Please apply through our website: https://www.athenastandardsresidency.com

We invite emerging and established artists with a dedicated studio practice to apply. We are able to accommodate painters, mixed media & installation artists, photographers with a studio practice and printmakers who do not require the use of a press. The studio building has WIFI and we can accept video and sound artists who work primarily on their laptops.

The residency fee includes shared housing in Athens, with another residency artist, and full access to the Athena Standards Studio. The studio building is keypad entry, and staffed by the Studio Manager on weekdays, and a security guard in the evenings. We are able to accommodate 14 artists per residency session.

The residency program provides the artists with an open format studio space in a repurposed commercial building, located in a bustling neighborhood of coffee shops, bars and restaurants and conveniently situated next to the Kato Patissia Metro stop. The studio boasts abundant natural light, and includes such amenities as a communal workspace/ woodshop, storage for works in progress, a kitchenette and lounge, keypad access and a security guard in the evenings, as well as a studio manager to provide assistance five days per week.

Additionally, a series of visiting artist talks of various practitioners of the cultural industry have been organized so that by the end of their stay in Athens the ASR residents will have experienced a comprehensive consultancy regarding their practice. The residency program concludes with an open studio event in which members of the artistic community are invited to tour the studios and see the final works. Uniquely, we are also able to offer artists-in-residence the opportunity to curate an exhibition/ installation/ performance on a floor of the studio building that has yet to be renovated.

All applications are reviewed by our International Selection Committee on a monthly basis, in the order they are received. Each year we invite a group of artists, historians, curators and art practitioners to serve on the selection committee for the duration of the year. These members not only contribute their professional expertise but also embody the Athena Standards Residency’s commitment to establishing an international network of collaboration and cultural exchange.

While we don’t offer any funding through the Residency itself, we are committed to assisting applicants in discovering grants and stipend opportunities through outside organizations, as well as providing an official letter of acceptance as needed. As an artist run organization, we strive to keep the residency program affordable for both emerging and established artists. Private donors support the maintenance of the studio building and allow us to keep the cost of the residency down.
