Searching for the Miraculous -> The Curfew Tower 2019 Residency

We are interested in the idea of exploration, journey, the quest for something better, and places that are foreign and familiar.

In July 1975 Bas Jan Ader left Cape Cod, Massachusetts in a small sailboat called the Ocean Wave, in search of the miraculous. He left on a solo voyage, a transatlantic journey, from Cape Cod to Falmouth, England. On April 18th, 1976 approximately 150 nautical miles from the southwest coast of Ireland his boat was discovered and he was nowhere to be found. He disappeared from the face of the earth...searching for something. Artists are asked to submit proposals that relate to the idea of ‘searching for the miraculous’ leaving it open for various interpretations.

We are seeking proposals for a 1 month residency at the Curfew Tower in Northern Ireland. The Curfew Tower is in a small town called Cushendall on the Antrim Coast of Northeast Ireland. The tower was built in 1817 and was originally used as a prison. It is a multi-story building located in the center of Cushendall. The residency supports 1 artist at a time per month. The tower has a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and workspace. Artists are responsible for bringing whatever materials they need, including any tools or equipment. There is electricity and heat in the building but Wifi is not provided.

The artists Westen Charles and Elizabeth Withstandley are organizing this project. They are co-founders of Locust Projects a not-for-profit art space in Miami, Florida.
