Pelham Art Center is pleased to announce a call for entries for the 10th biennial Alexander Rutsch Award and Exhibition for Painting. This juried competition is open to U.S.-based artists aged 19 and older. The winner is awarded a $5,000 cash prize and a solo exhibition at the Art Center. The Art Center is proud to sponsor this competition and award honoring the memory and artistic achievement of artist Alexander Rutsch (1916 – 1997). Rutsch actively supported the Art Center for more than 25 years. After his death, friends, family and supporters established a generous fund to support a biennial, open, juried competition in painting.  The jury is compromised of 10 art professionals including curators and artists. The 9th Rutsch Award recipient was Boston-based artist Sammy Chong (www.sammychong.com).

“This national painting competition has a fantastic award of a $5,000 stipend and solo exhibition at the Pelham Art Center. Artists are encouraged to apply because all works are reviewed by a panel of art professionals and curators. The Pelham Art Center keeps artists on file for potential future group exhibitions.” - Charlotte Mouquin, Executive Director of the Pelham Art Center.

The Alexander Rutsch Award and Exhibition program continues Rutsch’s belief that art transcends all of our humanity. Rutsch saw art as “the stone in the water sending ripples throughout the universe.” His extraordinary work, rich in the celebration of life and our shared human experiences, is included in many of public and private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe. "I am proud that this is the 10th Alexander Rutsch Memorial Award. My family and I are honored to have his art and memory be continued." – Alexandra Rutsch-Brock, artist, educator and curator.

Those interested in submitting work for the 10th Alexander Rutsch Award and Exhibition can find the prospectus and entry form at www.pelhamartcenter.org/rutsch. Deadline for entries: January 25, 2019.
