Is Texas Painting? convokes Texas-based artists and scholars who undertake work within the expanded conceptual and material field of painting. The symposium title is a provocative – yet open – inquiry into current practices in painting. As such, Is Texas Painting? does not presume to delimit the content or character of these practices. The symposium’s programming will instead be shaped by the very concerns, investigations, and research topics of its participants. Is Texas Painting? invites proposals for papers, presentations, and panels on the practice, history, and theory of painting.

Is Texas Painting? is the second endeavor to assemble this regional community, following from the 2018 Oso Bay Biennial, first curated and coordinated by Associate Professor Joe Peña at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi. For its 2020 edition, the symposium seeks the participation of all professionals, practitioners, theorists, historians, and students who do the work of ’painting’, from within the disciplines of Studio Art, Art History, and Art Theory and Criticism. Renowned curators Joseph M. Bravo and Chad Dawkins (both of San Antonio, TX) will each mount a major exhibition of Texas painting in the TTU Landmark Arts Gallery and LHUCA Helen Devitt Jones Studio Gallery, respectively. All participating artists, both professionals and students, will be invited to install a small work (no dimension to exceed 24”) in the Charles Adams 5&J Gallery. This show will premiere April 3 on the Lubbock First Friday Art Trail, a multivenue, monthly art event, which typically garners the attendance of over 3,000 people.

Sessions will take place on Friday, April 3, and Saturday, April 4, on the campus of Texas Tech University. Symposium registration fees will be waived for successful proposals. Individual presentations will be twenty minutes in length. Panels may be comprised of no more than one chairperson and three discussants. Panels will be one hour in length, including a fifteen-minute Q&A. Some suggested panel topics are: painting and/at the US-Mexico border, painting and technology, LatinX/ChicanX painting, pre-1950s painting, vernacular/outsider art, institutional painting department histories in Texas, and painting in interdisciplinary research.

Submission requirements:

     o Title and abstract for your paper or session (250 words maximum), specifying audiovisual needs

     o CVs (no more than 1 page) for presenter(s) and/or panel discussants, including contact information (names, affiliations, and email addresses)
