CAA Deplores Pressure to Remove Artwork at the National Portrait Gallery

The Executive Committee of the CAA Board of Directors adopted the following statement on December 7, 2010. At the bottom of the page is information about a special session at the upcoming CAA Annual Conference, chaired by Jonathan Katz, a scholar and the cocurator of Hide/Seek.

CAA Statement

The College Art Association regrets the removal of David Wojnarowicz’s A Fire in My Belly (1987) from the exhibition Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture, on display at the National Portrait Gallery. It was taken out on November 30 by G. Wayne Clough, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, in response to outside pressure. CAA further expresses profound disappointment that the House speaker–designate, John A. Boehner of Ohio, and the incoming majority leader, Eric Cantor of Virginia, have used their positions to question future funding for the Smithsonian Institution.

CAA applauds the National Portrait Gallery for its groundbreaking exhibition, which presents the long-suppressed subject of same-sex orientation. Furthermore, CAA commends the thorough, pioneering scholarship and the challenging curatorial judgment made by the organizers of Hide/Seek—David C. Ward, a historian at the museum, and Jonathan Katz, director of the Visual Studies Doctoral Program at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. That the work of everyone involved has been heedlessly compromised is deeply troubling. The pressure brought to bear on the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian sounds a familiar note from 1989, when direct federal funding to artists was ended due to political pressure. Then as now, CAA strongly protests such tactics.

Government has a long tradition of supporting universities, museums, and libraries—institutions that have produced research that expresses a variety of positions on all subjects. Freedom of expression is one of the great strengths of American democracy and one that our country holds up as a model for emerging democracies elsewhere. Americans understand that ideas expressed in books and artworks are those of their makers, not of the institutions that house them, and certainly do not represent public policy.

CAA urges all members to let your senators and representatives know of your support for the exhibition, its curators, and the National Portrait Gallery. You may also use advocacy tools provided by the National Humanities Alliance or Americans for the Arts.

Academe

David Cloutier, a painter who earned his MFA in 2005 at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, has returned to his school to teach in the foundations program.

Olivia Robinson, a multimedia fiber artist who has lectured, taught, and exhibited across the United States, has joined the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore to teach fiber art.

Gerry Snyder, a painter and chair of the Art Department at Santa Fe University of Art and Design in New Mexico, has been named vice president for academic affairs at his institution.

Jonathan Thomas, a printmaker and lecturer in print media at the University of Miami in Florida since 2004, has begun teaching printmaking at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.

Museums and Galleries

Elizabeth Kathleen Mitchell has been named the Burton and Deedee McMurtry Curator of Drawings, Prints, and Photographs at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University in Stanford, California.

Eric Segal, formerly assistant professor of art history at the University of Florida in Gainesville, has been appointed curator of academic programs at the school’s Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art, a newly created position.

Elizabeth Wyckoff, assistant director for curatorial affairs and education at the Davis Museum and Cultural Center at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, will assume the role of curator of prints, drawings, and photographs at the Saint Louis Art Museum in Missouri on December 1, 2010.

Organizations and Publications

Patricia Cronin, an artist and associate professor of art at Brooklyn College, City University of New York, has been appointed to the board of directors of Civitella Ranieri Foundation, a residency fellowship program for artists, composers, and writers in Umbertide, Italy.

Madeleine C. Viljoen has become curator of prints at the New York Public Library. She was previously director and chief curator of the La Salle University Art Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

At its May 2010 meeting, the CAA Board of Directors approved a resolution that updates the Standards for Retention and Tenure of Art Historians. Submitted by Anne Collins Goodyear, vice president for publications, the addendum urges academic tenure-and-promotions committees to consider and evaluate museum publications when making their deliberations. Exhibition catalogues, the resolution notes, may be published by an academic press or museum, or in association with a nonacademic press.

The following paragraphs, which are part of the addendum, provide background for the resolution:

During the past ten years, while academic publishing has been shrinking dramatically, museum publishing has flourished, moving to the forefront as the venue for much substantial scholarship in our field.

Museum exhibition and collection catalogues are not, by and large, peer-reviewed in the traditional sense. The long lead times required for blind peer review do not accommodate the tight schedules of most exhibition catalogues, which must appear when shows open. Yet exhibition catalogues do undergo a form of peer review. Though not blind, it is thorough, as the collaborative curatorial teams that produce exhibition catalogues, and museums’ editorial departments and consultants, carefully evaluate the scholarship contained within, striving to ensure that it is accurate and of the highest possible quality.

In the past, one argument lodged against exhibition catalogues has been that the essays can vary in quality. Some essays in exhibition catalogues—at times in the same catalogue—contain original, important scholarship, while others can be included for political reasons, perhaps to secure certain loans or financial contributions essential to the successful mounting of a show. In fact, this situation is not fundamentally different from scholarship published in festschrifts, anthologies, or other non-museum collections of scholarly essays. It is not unusual for some authors in such publications to be included for practical, rather than scholarly, reasons. Yet this does not disqualify every essay in these publications from being considered in tenure decisions.

Helen Evans of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Lucy Oakley of the Grey Art Gallery at New York University authored the proposal, with input from the Publications Committee. The Professional Practices Committee, which reviews new and revised Standards and Guidelines, endorsed the proposal, which the board then passed.

The addendum has been added to Standards for Retention and Tenure of Art Historians and joins updates made in 2005 and 2007. CAA encourages you to review all official Standards and Guidelines for professionals in the visual arts.

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas, has received a Museums for America grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The $150,000 award supports the Access to American Photography initiative, which will allow the museum to digitize and catalogue nearly twenty-five thousand photographs from its collection.

The Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York has received subsequent accreditation from the American Association of Museums (AAM). The honor signifies that the museum has undergone a rigorous, lengthy process of self-examination and peer review, and has been subsequent approved by AAM’s Accreditation Commission.

Kennesaw State University (KSU) in Kennesaw, Georgia, has accepted a $2 million pledge to build an art museum that will house the school’s permanent collection. To receive a $1 million pledge from Bernard A. Zuckerman, a former carpet-industry executive, KSU must raise at least $1 million of its own in the next nine months.

The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore has announced several new academic programs that have just started or will launch soon: an MFA in community arts (2010); an MPS in the business of art and design (May 2011); an MFA in curatorial practice (fall 2011); an MFA in illustration practice (fall 2011); an MA in social design (in development, fall 2011); and an integrated double-major BFA in humanistic studies and studio discipline (fall 2011).

The National Gallery of Australia in Canberra has welcomed a $7 million gift from the Melbourne philanthropist Pauline Gandel and John Gandel AO. The donation will help develop the national art collection for future generations of Australians. Further, the newly named Gandel Hall will host openings, special events, public programs, and school and educational activities.

The New Orleans Museum of Art in Louisiana has received subsequent accreditation from the American Association of Museums (AAM). This means that the institution has undergone a rigorous, lengthy process of self-examination and peer review, and was subsequent approved by AAM’s Accreditation Commission.

American Society for Hispanic Art Historical Studies

The American Society for Hispanic Art Historical Studies (ASHAHS) has partnered with ARTES, a group based in the United Kingdom and Ireland dedicated to Iberian and Latin American art, to produce an annual issue of Hispanic Research Journal on the visual arts. To be released in December 2010, the issue will feature studies on Spanish and Latin American topics by Hilary Macartney, Jesusa Vega, Mercedes Cerón, and Rosemarie Mulcahy, plus a tribute to Nigel Glendinning by Marjorie Trusted.

Arts Council of the African Studies Association

The Arts Council of the African Studies Association (ACASA) is currently seeking three new board members. If interested, please contact Karen Milbourne. The Association of Academic Museums and Galleries (AAMG) will hold its next annual conference, “Who’s Muse? Challenges to the Curatorial Profession in Academic Museums,” on May 21, 2011, at the University of Houston’s Blaffer Art Museum in Texas. Curatorial practices in academic museums and galleries are sometimes highly experimental. Faculty members from a wide variety of fields and with limited curatorial experience periodically recommend and help lead exhibition projects. The organization of exhibitions likewise engages both graduate and undergraduate students, museum-education professionals, librarians, and even area school classes in project leadership roles. Exhibitions thus generated offer unorthodox approaches to curatorial planning and execution. Appropriate to our scholarly mission, they can stretch disciplinary boundaries, cross-fertilize disciplinary methodologies, and generate wholly new paradigms for knowledge. Our academic museums and galleries thus become vital centers of original research, interdisciplinary dialogue, and participatory learning. While this democratic and laboratory approach to curatorial practice contributes in significant ways to the groundbreaking research and all-important teaching missions of our universities and colleges, it can also challenge conventional standards of the curatorial profession. Through the presentation of outstanding case studies and lively roundtable discussions, the 2011 conference will explore the pros and cons of the broad curatorial approaches found in academic museums and galleries. This year, AAMG will include a late-morning, lunch-period session, called HOT TOPICS, on current issues in academic museums and galleries. Submit your ideas for this session with your conference registration, vote, and select a HOT TOPICS table for lunchtime conversation.

Association of Historians of American Art

The Association of Historians of American Art (AHAA) is offering a travel grant to cover CAA Annual Conference expenses up to $500 for an ABD student of historical art of the United States who will travel to the 2011 meeting in New York to participate in the program. The successful recipient must be enrolled in a graduate program and an AHAA member. Deadline: February 1, 2011.

AHAA is seeking to sponsor a 1½-hour professional session at the CAA Annual Conference in Los Angeles in 2012. Submission guidelines for session proposals are located online. Deadline: March 1, 2011.

Association of Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art

Starting in September 2010, the Association of Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art (AHNCA) will send its membership directory electronically as a searchable PDF. Members who do not have email will continue to receive a hardcopy by mail.

At the CAA Annual Conference in New York in 2011, AHNCA members are invited to a free, private visit to the New York Public Library Prints and Photographs Study Room on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, 11:00 AM–12:30 PM. Curators Stephen Pinson and David Christie will introduce members to highlights and rarely exhibited holdings in the library’s extensive collection of prints and photographs. Historians of Islamic Art Association

The Historians of Islamic Art Association (HIAA) will hold its second biennial symposium on the theme of “Objects, Collections and Cultures” at the Freer and Sackler Galleries in Washington, DC. Taking place October 21–23, 2010, the program features an opening address by Julian Raby, director of the Freer and Sackler; thematic sessions with formal presentations; seminar-style workshops on art objects in the museums’ collections; and a roundtable discussion on the arts of the object in Islamic art history today. International Sculpture Center

The International Sculpture Center (ISC) is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York on October 22, 2010. The evening’s festivities will include a cocktail reception, entertainment, and an art sale featuring works by Fletcher Benton, Chakaia Booker, Mark di Suvero, John Clement, Carole Feuerman, John Henry, Jun Kaneko, Donald Lipski, Jesús Moroles, Manuel Neri, Tom Otterness, Albert Paley, Joel Perlman, Judy Pfaff, Kenneth Snelson, Stretch, James Surls, Boaz Vaadia, and Mia Westerlund, among others to be announced. Japan Art History Forum

The Japan Art History Forum (JAHF) has awarded its the eight annual Chino Kaori Memorial Book Prize, which honors excellence in graduate-student scholarship in Japanese art history, to Christina Striker, a student in the PhD Program in Visual Studies at the University of California, Irvine. Striker’s winning essay is titled “Creating an Origin, Preserving a Past: Arnold Genthe’s 1908 Ainu Photography.”

Pacific Arts Association

The Pacific Arts Association (PAA) will present its affiliated-society session at the CAA Annual Conference in February 2011. Called “Documenting Oceania after the Twentieth Century,” the session focuses on how artists and scholars document Pacific identities in the first decade of the twenty-first century through expressive forms such as social documentary film, the internet, the museum, and poetry. The panel redefines the form and purpose of the “documentary” as a point of reference for current and future scholarship about Oceanic art. Chaired by Bernida Anne Webb-Binder, PhD candidate in the history of art and visual studies at Cornell University, the session includes presentations from: Ursula-Ann Aneriueta Siataga, MA candidate in social documentation, University of California, Santa Cruz; Julie Risser, director and curator at the American Museum of Asmat Art, University of St. Thomas; Luseane Nina Kinahoi Tonga, PhD candidate in art history, University of Auckland; and Craig Santos Perez, PhD candidate in comparative ethnic studies, University of California, Berkeley.

Radical Art Caucus

The Radical Art Caucus (RAC) is gearing up to celebrate its tenth birthday at the upcoming CAA Annual Conference in New York. Society for Photographic Education

Society of North American Goldsmiths

The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) and Hoover and Strong have joined to create the Harmony Jewelry Design Competition, named after Harmony Metals, the environmentally sustainable metals from Hoover and Strong. Professional jewelry makers and students will compete in separate categories. The top-winning piece will be manufactured and distributed nationally by Hoover and Strong, with profits from sales benefiting the Nature Conservancy. Student winners will receive scholarships, and winners will receive a national award and have their names publicized nationwide; they will also be a part of a remarkable shift to environmentally sustainable materials in the industry. The 2011 SNAG conference takes place May 26–29, 2011, in Seattle, Washington. Hosted by the Seattle Metals Guild and sponsored by Rio Grande, the exciting program of twelve speakers, exhibitions, and special events will address the theme of “FLUX.” Internationally recognized participants include: the keynote speaker Glenn Adamson; Valeria Vallarta Siemelink, cofounder of Otro Diseño Foundation for Cultural Cooperation and Development; the artist and sculptor John Grade; and Damian Skinner, an art historian, curator, and editor. Rising stars in the field—David Clemons, Masako Onodera, Miel-Margarita Paredes, Sarah Troper, and Stacey Lee Webber—will give talks on their work. SNAG seeks submissions of work for exhibitions held in conjunction with the Seattle conference. The Art Jewelry Forum will produce an exhibition onsite at the SNAG 2011 conference hotel in Seattle, curated by Susan Cummins and Mike Holmes. Additional exhibitions include Dual at Traver Gallery in Seattle and Co:Operation Tableware, an exhibition featuring work by pairs of artists who cooperatively create a set of tableware (functional or nonfunctional).

Southeastern College Art Conference

From November 9 to 12, 2011, the Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC) will hold its sixty-seventh annual meeting, hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia. The conference headquarters will be the DeSoto Hilton Hotel, located in the heart of historic Savannah. Featuring extensive panels and sessions for the exchange of ideas and concerns relevant to the practice and study of art, the conference will include the annual awards luncheon and the fourteenth annual members’ exhibition, as well as a rich array of tours, workshops, and evening events. The curator Dan Cameron will jury the SECAC members’ exhibition, to be held at one of SCAD’s premier venues, and present the plenary address. CAA Welcomes New Staff Members and Thanks Summer Interns

Over the summer of 2010, CAA made four new hires—two full-time and two part-time positions—and benefited from the help of several interns who worked across CAA departments. We warmly welcome the new staff members and thank the interns for their hard work.

New CAA Staff

Teresa Lopez has been CAA’s chief financial officer since June 2010. Before coming to the organization, she was controller at the Dia Art Foundation in New York and held the same position at David Zwirner and Zwirner and Wirth, two Manhattan-based art galleries. After studying engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, she took up accounting at Hunter College, City University of New York. A certified public accountant in the state of New York, Lopez has an interest in both art and art history. She succeeds Robert Wayne, who is now chief financial officer at the Palm Springs Art Museum in California.

As the new CAA office coordinator, Roberta Lawson helps route information, acts as liaison with vendors, and manages the general functioning of the office. She previously held positions at Art Crating and Crozier Fine Art, two top firms in New York’s art shipping and storage industry. Lawson has taught studio art at Rutgers University’s Newark campus and on the high school level, at Hunter College High School in New York. After completing a BFA at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, she earned an MFA from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Both programs were invaluable for her development as an artist, providing strong foundational and conceptual perspectives. A longtime figurative painter, Lawson is investigating the nude in an imaginative landscape in her current work, referencing myth while using color as a psychological force. She replaces Anitral Haendel, who is now pursuing an MFA at the California Institute of Arts in Valencia.

Cecilia Juan joined CAA’s Publications Department in July as data collection coordinator, where she is the primary contact for universities participating in the 2011 editions of the Directories of Graduate Programs in the Arts. A former intern at Exit Art and the New York Council for the Humanities, Juan is pursuing an MA in visual-arts administration at New York University, researching online fundraising strategies for alternative and community-based arts organizations. Before moving to New York last year, she spent two years traveling and teaching English in Japan and the Czech Republic. Juan has a BFA in photography and a BA in English from the University of Florida in Gainesville. Her position at CAA is a new one.

Elizabeth Donato is CAA’s new programs assistant, helping with various aspects of planning and preparing for upcoming annual conferences. Prior to joining the Programs Department, she was a research assistant for scholars and curators in New York; she also interned in curatorial departments at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Pennsylvania and the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut. With a BA in art history from the University of Richmond in Virginia, Donato has begun work toward a PhD in art history at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. She is focusing on modern and contemporary Latin American art, with an emphasis on art from the Southern Cone of South America and on socially engaged aesthetics. Donato succeeds Jeanne Jo, who is now in the doctoral program in media arts and practice at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

CAA Summer Interns

Grace Paik and Maureen Ragalie worked in the Membership, Marketing, and Development Department. Paik, a fall intern at Horton Gallery in New York, recently double-majored in art history and English at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. Ragalie is currently at New York University, earning an MA in museum studies. She is also interning at the New York Public Library and Independent Curators International.

Tom Carr, a junior at Rutgers, interned in the Publications Department. In addition to studying art history, he is an accomplished viola player who performs in his school’s orchestra.

Two recent high school graduates, Amanda Morton and Tyroo Tyler, worked in CAA’s Finance Department. They participated in the Summer Youth Employment Program in New York City’s Department of Youth and Community Development before heading to college this fall. Academe

Cameron Cartiere has been appointed dean of graduate studies at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, British Columbia.

W. Mick Charney, professor of architectural history at Kansas State University in Manhattan, has been appointed coordinator of the university’s Faculty Exchange for Teaching Excellence for 2010–12.

Gregg Horowitz, formerly associate professor of philosophy at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, will chair the Social Science and Cultural Studies Department at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.

Julia Morrisroe has been promoted to associate professor and granted tenure in the School of Art and Art History at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Denise Mullen, an artist and academic art administrator, has been appointed president of the Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland.

David Raskin has been promoted to professor in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois.

Michael Yonan has been promoted to associate professor with tenure in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at the University of Missouri in Columbia.

Steven Zucker, formerly dean of graduate studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York, has been named chair of the History of Art and Design Department at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.

Museums

Brooke Davis Anderson has been named deputy director for curatorial planning at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California.

Lynette Roth, currently Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellow in Modern Art at the Saint Louis Art Museum in Missouri, has been named Daimler-Benz Associate Curator of the Busch-Reisinger Museum, part of the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She will begin her new position on January 3, 2011.

Elizabeth Smith, formerly chief curator and deputy director of programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Illinois, has been appointed executive director of curatorial affairs at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto.

Organizations

Deborah Marrow has been chosen as interim replacement director and chief executive officer of board of directors of the J. Paul Getty Foundation in Los Angeles, California, following the unexpected death of James E. Wood.

Jonathan Nelson, coordinator of the Art History Department at Syracuse University in Florence, has been appointed to the three-year position of assistant director for programs at the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies Villa I Tatti, also in Florence.

The Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, has extended its name. The institution will be known now as the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. The new name does not signify a shift in mission of the museum but rather clarifies what it has been offering since the mid-1960s.

The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, has begun a three-year collaboration with Brenau University in Gainesville, Georgia, that will allow for the sharing of resources to further the integration of the arts into Brenau’s educational curriculum. During this pilot initiative, Brenau will have the opportunity to draw on the High’s exhibitions, collections, programs, and staff expertise.

Hunter College, City University of New York, has announced a partnership between the Art Department and the Fundación Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC) to support the teaching and development of Latin American art at the school. The initiative establishes the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Professorship in Latin American Art and provides Hunter students with access to CPPC resources, which range from curatorial scholarship and archival material to artworks from the collection that will be made available to the Hunter College Art Galleries for study, exhibition, and publication.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art in Indiana has received $200,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts through its Mayors’ Institute of City Design 25th Anniversary Initiative. This program supports creative place-making projects that contribute to the livability of communities and help transform sites into lively, beautiful, and sustainable places with the arts at their core.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California has received a second $75,000 donation from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to help build a sustainable film program at the museum. The first donation came a year ago, which supported screenings through summer 2010.

Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore has received a two-year, $200,000 grant from the Kresge Foundation’s College/Arts Initiative to expand the reach of the college’s Community Arts Partnerships (CAP) program and to determine a tangible, quantifiable link between community arts activity and the seemingly intangible outcomes of hope, well being, and engagement. The grant will fund four to six new community partnerships for CAP, which link art students interested in community engagement with low-income communities, serving an additional 100 to 175 inner-city residents. The College/Arts Initiative grant also will provide seed funding for the school’s partnership with the Gallup Student Poll on data collection and analysis, seeking to generate findings that will support the work of community arts practitioners.

Ox-Bow in Saugatuck, Michigan, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois have received a $1 million gift from the LeRoy Neiman Foundation to support Ox-Bow’s school of art and artists’ residency program, which is currently celebrating its one hundredth anniversary as an internationally renowned haven for visual artists, writers, and scholars. The LeRoy Neiman Scholarship Fund at Ox-Bow will provide student scholarships and support Ox-Bow’s Fellowship Program, which provides studio space and funding for twelve to fourteen students from art schools across the country to spend their summer at Ox-Bow.

The University of California, Los Angeles, has received a $1 million gift from the Resnick Family Foundation to provide need-based support for undergraduate and graduate students in the School of the Arts and Architecture. The funds were contributed to the Bruin Scholars Initiative, which since January 2009 has bolstered predictable, ongoing funding earmarked for student support amid increasing fees and a diminished economy affecting family incomes.

Julia Whitney Barnes, an artist based in Brooklyn, New York, has received a 2010 Edwin Austin Abbey Mural Workshop Fellowship from the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts in New York. The workshop, which took place in July 2010, was a unique opportunity for artists to learn how to compete successfully for public mural commissions.

Rachel Epp Buller has received a Fulbright Scholar Grant for 2010–11. The Fulbright, along with a grant from the Gerda Henkel Foundation in Düsseldorf, will fund research for a book on the German artist Alice Lex.

John Casey, a doctoral student at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, has received the Dedalus Foundation’s 2010 Dissertation Fellowship Award for his study, “Picturing Architectural Theory: The Architectural Photobook in Germany, 1910–1945.” The $20,000 fellowship is awarded annually to a PhD candidate at an American university who is working on a dissertation related to modern art and modernism.

Jackie Gendel, an artist based in Brooklyn, New York, has received a grant from the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation’s Space Program for 2010–11, which provides free studios in New York for the creation of new works of art.

Jennifer A. Greenhill has received a subvention from the Wyeth Foundation for American Art to help support the publication of her book, Playing It Straight: Art and Humor in the Gilded Age, forthcoming from the University of California Press. The book investigates the strategies artists devised to simultaneously conform to and humorously undermine “serious” artistic culture during the late nineteenth century.

Kira Lynn Harris has won a grant from Art Matters, a nonprofit foundation based in New York, for travel to France and Spain to complete a series of large-scale drawings and photographs of the Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut by Le Corbusier, Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Família in Barcelona, and George Wyman’s Bradbury Building in Los Angeles. Art Matters supports artists based in the United States whose work focuses on communications and collaborations across national borders.

Lucy Raven has received funding from Art Matters, a nonprofit foundation based in New York, for research in Chennai, Kerala, and Mumbai, India, for a video project exploring the international outsourcing of three-dimensional animation and visual effects for the creation of American landscapes in Hollywood movies. Art Matters supports artists based in the United States whose work focuses on communications and collaborations across national borders.

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) New Faculty Fellows Program allows recent PhDs in the humanities to take up two-year positions at universities and colleges across the United States, where their particular research and teaching expertise augment departmental offerings. CAA member Christopher R. Lakey, a recent graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, won the fellowship for his dissertation, “Relief in Perspective: Italian Medieval Sculpture and the Rise of Optical Aesthetics.” He has been appointed at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, for 2010–12.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/ACLS Early Career Fellowships for Recent Doctoral Recipients provide a year’s support for scholars to advance their research following completion of the doctorate. CAA members Richard Patrick Anderson of Columbia University in New York won for “Toward a Socialist Architecture, 1928–1953”; and Meghan C. Doherty of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, won for “Carving Knowledge: Printed Images, Accuracy, and the Early Royal Society of London.”

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/ACLS Early Career Fellowship Program awards Dissertation Completion Fellowships, which provide support for young scholars to finish their dissertations; the fellowships are the first part of a program offering funding to scholars at the early stages of their careers. Among the recipients are two CAA members: Ellery Elisabeth Foutch of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia for “Arresting Beauty: The Perfectionist Impulse of Peale’s Butterflies, Heade’s Hummingbirds, Blaschka’s Flowers, and Sandow’s Body”; and Maile S. Hutterer of the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University for “Broken Outlines and Structural Exhibitionism: The Flying Buttress as Aesthetic Choice in Medieval France.”

The Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Dissertation Fellowships in American Art are awarded to graduate students in any stage of PhD dissertation research or writing for scholarship on a topic in the history of the visual arts of the United States. Although the topic may be historically and/or theoretically grounded, attention to the art object and/or image should be foremost. CAA member recipients are: Matthew K. Bailey of Washington University in St. Louis, Missoufor “Turbulent Bodies: Disruptive Materiality in Modern American Painting, 1880–1930”; Amanda Douberley of the University of Texas at Austin, for “The Corporate Model: Sculpture, Architecture, and the American City, 1946–1975”; Jason Goldman of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, for “Open Secrets: Publicity, Privacy, and Histories of American Art, 1958–69”; Anna C. Katz of Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey, for “Hybrid Species: Lee Bontecou’s Sculpture and Works on Paper, 1958–1971”; Rebecca E. Keegan of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, for “Black Artists, the Problem of Authenticity, and ‘Africa’ in the Twentieth Century”; Edward M. Puchner of Indiana University in Bloomington, for “‘speaking His mind in my mind’: Racialized Theology, Divine Inspiration, and African American Art”; and Katherine Elizabeth Roeder of the University of Delaware in Newark, for “‘Cultivating Dreamfulness’: Fantasy, Longing, and Commodity Culture in the Work of Winsor McCay, 1904–1914.”

The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts has announced its 2010 Curatorial Fellowships for Travel and Research. CAA member recipients are: Heather Campbell Coyle of the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington, for conducting research on an exhibition and publication of the work of Scott Heiser, a fashion photographer from the 1980s whose idiosyncratic body of work has been forgotten since his death in 1993 ($11,000); Kristina Van Dyke of the Menil Collection in Houston, Texas, working with Bisi Silva, to organize an exhibition on contemporary African art with a focus on how technology shapes notions and facilitates expressions of love in Africa ($38,400); and Jonathan Katz of the Tacoma Art Museum in Washington, working with Rock Hushka, to prepare for an exhibition that explores twenty-five years of art made in response to AIDS ($40,000).
