CAA Publishes Full Session Details for the 2011 Annual Conference

CAA has published full session information for the 99th Annual Conference and Centennial Kickoff in New York, taking place February 10–13, 2011. Along with the names of the sessions and their chairs, the conference website now offers the names and affiliations of all speakers, the titles of their papers or presentations, and the days, times, and locations of each panel.

The listings, which include regular program sessions (2½ hours) and shorter lunchtime and dinner sessions (1½ hours), are presented chronologically, from Wednesday morning to Saturday afternoon. This year’s conference will be plentiful and diverse and cover nearly every area of the practice, history, and teaching of art. Here are but five highlights among the two-hundred-plus sessions that conference registrants will have access to: “(Re)Contextualizing Precolumbian Art in the Twenty-First Century”; “Participation and Engagement: Curating Contemporary Art after New Media”; “Making a Living as an Artist: With or Without a Gallery”; “Emergent Practices: Arts-Based Research and Teaching”; and the two-part “Claiming Authorship: Artists, Patrons, and Strategies of Self-promotion in Medieval and Early Modern Italy.”

In celebration of its one-hundredth anniversary, CAA will present special Centennial sessions that address broad themes in the visual arts and gather top artists, scholars, and thinkers for invigorating debate. These sessions include “Feminism,” led by Norma Broude and Griselda Pollock; “Art/Technology Global Sample,” with Mark Tribe and Chris Csikszentmihalyi as chairs; and “Globalization,” guided by James Elkins and Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann. Just added this week was “Against Acknowledgment: Sexuality and the Instrumentalization of Knowledge,” chaired by Jonathan Katz, cocurator of Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture, the controversial exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.

Poster sessions—which are live, informal presentations by individuals, aided by displays on poster boards and with an interactive audience element—take place on Thursday and Friday afternoons. Among the thirteen topics are: “Walt Disney: Undergraduate Research and Critical Thinking,” “How the Sausage Is Made: A Model of Graphic Design Practice and Teaching,” and “Analysis of University Press Production in Art and Art History, 1991–2007.”

CAA launched the website for the New York conference, headquartered at the Hilton New York in midtown Manhattan, in early October. It expands on the 2011 Conference Information and Registration booklet that was mailed to all members; new material and information will continue to be added between now and February. Online registration is open. You can also buy tickets for special events, such as the Centennial Reception at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and several postconference tours, and sign up for a professional-development workshop. American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Art Works

The Institute of Museum and Library Services has awarded a $219,245 grant for Collections Emergency Response Training to the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Art Works (AIC). AIC will expand and enhance its Collections Emergency Response Team (AIC-CERT) program to better support small museums and historic sites in responding to emergencies. Continuing education will be provided for existing team members to update and maintain skills between deployments. Forty additional museum professionals will be trained in the same body of knowledge and to the same standard as the original AIC-CERT. Participants will be selected based on their ability to respond to emergencies in underserved areas of the country. In collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, AIC will provide basic emergency preparedness and response training for staff members of over two hundred small museums to prepare their institutions, assist other museums in their region, and work more effectively with AIC-CERT members following a disaster.

American Society of Hispanic Art Historical Studies

The American Society of Hispanic Art Historical Studies (ASHAHS) invites nominations for its annual Eleanor Tufts Award for a distinguished book in English on the history of art and architecture in Iberia. ASHAHS established the award in 1992 to honor Professor Tufts’ contributions to the study of Spanish art history. A PDF of the submission guidelines is available on the website. Deadline: December 15, 2010.

ASHAHS also invites its student members to apply for the Photographs Grant for those preparing an MA thesis or a doctoral dissertation on topics in the history of Spanish or Portuguese art and architecture, according to the procedure listed in the Fall 2010 newsletter.

Art Libraries Society of North America

CAA’s Professional Practices Committee recently asked the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) and the Visual Resources Association (VRA) to prepare an updated version of their joint document, “Criteria for the Hiring and Retention of Visual Resources Professionals.” The ARLIS and VRA boards authorized a joint task force and named Allan Kohl and Amy Lucker, immediate past presidents of the two organizations, as cochairs. The Criteria Revision Task Force will investigating current practices and trends, taking into account recent research, statistical information, and anecdotal evidence. The 2009 VRA White Paper and the 2007 VRA Professional Status Survey, along with similar documents and related research, will provide useful summaries of conditions and practices. The task force also wants to apply the document to various constituencies, including administrators and faculty, in addition to library and visual-resources professionals. The new version will acknowledge the development of many different administrative models, combinations of duties, and relationships with other reporting areas within our organizations. Arts Council of the African Studies Association

The board of the Arts Council of the African Studies Association (ACASA) seeks three new members for the 2011–13 term. Self-nomination and outside nomination will be considered. Please contact Jean Borgatti or Karen Milbourne for more information.

The fifteenth ACASA triennial symposium on African art, entitled “Africa and Its Diasporas in the Market Place: Cultural Resources and the Global Economy,” will be held at the University of California, Los Angeles, from March 23 to 26, 2011. The core theme will examine the current state of Africa’s cultural resources and the influence—for good or ill—of market forces both inside and outside the continent. Association for Modern and Contemporary Art of the Arab World, Iran, and Turkey

The Association for Modern and Contemporary Art of the Arab World, Iran, and Turkey (AMCA) is organizing its first conference, titled “Modern Arab Art: Objects, Histories, and Methodologies.” This two-day event will be hosted in collaboration with Mathaf:Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, Qatar, and will take place December 14–17, 2010, in conjunction with the museum’s inauguration events. The museum will use its preeminent collection of modern and contemporary Arab art as a catalyst for critical and creative exchanges across diverse audiences, and this conference will bring together both established and emerging scholars working throughout the world in order to interrogate potent issues of concern that define and shape modern Arab art today. The conference will also historicize and contextualize the production of modern Arab art and modernity—and by extension the “contemporary”—through thematic and historiographic inquires into the field.

Association for Textual Scholarship in Art History

The Association for Textual Scholarship in Art History (ATSAH), in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Studies at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell, will present a symposium, “Artistic Manifestations in Architecture,” at the Whistler House Museum of Art on December 11, 2010. The Association of Academic Museums and Galleries (AAMG) will hold its next annual conference, “Who’s Muse? Challenges to the Curatorial Profession in Academic Museums,” on May 21, 2011, at the University of Houston’s Blaffer Art Museum in Texas. Curatorial practices in academic museums and galleries are sometimes highly experimental. Faculty members from a wide variety of fields and with limited curatorial experience periodically recommend and help lead exhibition projects. The organization of exhibitions likewise engages both graduate and undergraduate students, museum-education professionals, librarians, and even area school classes in project leadership roles. Exhibitions thus generated offer unorthodox approaches to curatorial planning and execution. Appropriate to a scholarly mission, they can stretch disciplinary boundaries, cross-fertilize disciplinary methodologies, and generate wholly new paradigms for knowledge. Academic museums and galleries thus become vital centers of original research, interdisciplinary dialogue, and participatory learning. While this democratic and laboratory approach to curatorial practice contributes in significant ways to the groundbreaking research and all-important teaching missions of universities and colleges, it can also challenge conventional standards of the curatorial profession. Through the presentation of outstanding case studies and lively roundtable discussions, the 2011 conference will explore the pros and cons of the broad curatorial approaches found in academic museums and galleries. This year, AAMG will include a late-morning, lunch-period session, called HOT TOPICS, on current issues in academic museums and galleries. The Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) has announced the ten outstanding curators from art museums across the United States who will participate in the 2011 fellowship program of the Center for Curatorial Leadership. Selected by a panel of leading museum directors, the 2011 recipients are:

Association of Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art

The Association of Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art (AHNCA) will sponsor a two-part session at the upcoming CAA Annual Conference in New York. James H. Rubin will chair “Music and Other Paradigms for Nineteenth-Century Art,” which takes place on Saturday, February 12, at two locations. The morning session will be held 9:30 AM–NOON in the Nassau Suite, Second Floor, Hilton New York; and the afternoon counterpart will happen 2:30–5:00 PM in the Madison Suite, Second Floor. AHNCA will also make appearances at three additional conferences. Julie Codell and Allison Morehead will chair a session at the annual conference of the Nineteenth-Century Studies Association. Called “Money/Myths,” the conference will take place March 3–6, 2011, at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. AHNCA will sponsor a session at “Speaking Nature” the Interdisciplinary Nineteenth-Century Studies at Pitzer College, taking place March 31–April 3, 2011. Foundations in Art: Theory and Education

Foundations in Art: Theory and Education and Mid-America College Art Association

Foundations in Art: Theory and Education (FATE) and the Mid-America College Art Association, another CAA affiliated society, will present a joint conference, called “ON STREAM,” at the Ball Park Hilton in St. Louis, Missouri. Taking place March 30–April 2, 2011, the conference will explore how artists and teachers develop and foster creativity in the second decade of the third millennium. Historians of Islamic Art Association

The 2011 annual majlis (meeting) of the Historians of Islamic Art Association (HIAA) will take place on February 12, 2011, 1:00–5:30 PM, at Hunter College, City University of New York. To access the event, taking place in the Lang Auditorium, on the fourth floor of the North Building, you will need your current HIAA membership. The program, organized by Ülkü Bates of Hunter’s Art Department, comprises five papers to be delivered in two sessions. The first session, chaired by Priscilla Soucek of the Institute of Fine Arts (IFA) at New York University, contains the following papers:

Italian Art Society

The Italian Art Society (IAS) invites proposals for the 2011 Italian Art Society/Kress Foundation Lecture in Italy. Sponsored by IAS with the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, the lecture series seeks to promote intellectual exchanges between art historians of North America and the international community of scholars living or working in Italy. The lecture will be held in Florence in late May or early June 2011. The proposed lecture may address any period in Italian art but must relate to the city of Florence or the region of Tuscany; it also may not have been previously published or presented at another conference or venue. Japan Art History Forum

The Japan Art History Forum is sponsoring a graduate-student panel at the CAA Annual Conference in New York. In addition, it will sponsor two panels at the Association for Asian Studies conference in March 2011: “Elite Patronage and Viewership of Japanese Art in the Age of the Toyotomi-Tokugawa Transition” and “The Dark Valley: Japanese Art and the Second World War.”

Society for Photographic Education

The Society for Photographic Education (SPE) forty-eighth national conference, called “Science, Poetry, and the Photographic Image,” will examine the confluence of the ideologies of scientists and poets in the context of photography. To be held March 10–13, 2011, at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel in Georgia, the conference will feature presentations from artists, educators, historians, and curators, as well as one-on-one portfolio critiques and informal portfolio sharing, a print raffle and silent auction, and film screenings, exhibitions, tours, and receptions. Speakers include Abelardo Morell, Catherine Wagner, Carolyn Guertin, and Justine Cooper. Student volunteers receive discounted admission.

Society of Architectural Historians annual meeting

Society of Architectural Historians

The Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) will hold its sixty-fourth annual meeting in New Orleans, April 13–17, 2011. The meeting will focus on new research in the history of architecture, landscapes, and urbanism in 150 papers delivered by historians, preservationists, and architects from around the world. Additional offerings at the meeting include evening receptions, networking opportunities, and a vast array of architecture and landscape tours of the city and region. This year, SAH will offer attendees the opportunity to perform community service at the Priestly School, a charter high school devoted to architecture and the arts. Society of North American Goldsmiths

The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) has partnered with curators Lauren Kalman (United States) and Carinne Terreblanche (South Africa) to produce the exhibition, Dichotomies in Objects: Contemporary South African Studio Jewelry from the Stellenbosch Area, on view January 23–April 1, 2011, at the Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. All selected artists are affiliated with Stellenbosch University, the only university in South Africa teaching conceptual approaches to jewelry making.

Work featured in the 2010 “Exhibition in Print” issue of Metalsmith, the magazine produced by SNAG, is now on view in Realizing the Neo-Palatial at the Metal Museum. The exhibition, curated by Garth Clark, is on view November 5, 2010–January 9, 2011.

Registration opens in mid-January for the SNAG conference, “FLUX,” which will take place May 26–29, 2011, in Seattle, Washington. Hosted by the Seattle Metals Guild and sponsored by Rio Grande. November Deaths in the Arts

CAA recognizes the lives and achievements of the following artists, designers, scholars, critics, and other men and women whose work has had a significant impact on the visual arts. Of special note is Jean Miller’s text on Todd DeVriese, written especially for CAA.

  • Todd DeVriese, an artist, educator, and dean of the College of Fine Arts and Humanities at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, died on November 15, 2010, while at a conference in India. He was 49
  • Helen Escobedo, a Mexican sculptor who explored modern materials in site-specific, outdoor, and public locations, died on September 16, 2010, at the age of 76. She was also a curator and director for several university-based and national museums and galleries
  • S. Neil Fujita, a graphic designer, illustrator, and painter who worked on numerous jazz album covers for Columbia Records in the 1950s and on book jackets with his own firm, died on October 23, 2010, at age 89. He also taught for many years at the Philadelphia Museum College of Art, Pratt Institute, and Parsons School of Design.
  • Robert Goodnough, a painter from the second generation of Abstract Expressionists whose diverse body of work touched on many modernist styles, died on October 2, 2010, at age 92. He showed his work at Tibor de Nagy and André Emmerich galleries in New York
  • Kathryn Hixson, an art critic, former editor of the New Art Examiner, and adjunct professor in various departments at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, died on November 7, 2010, at the age of 55. She also curated several exhibitions in Texas and Illinois
  • Eric Joisel, a French artist who created innovative, complex sculptures in origami, died on October 10, 2010, at the age of 53. His works can be found in the Louvre and in private collections worldwide
  • Thomas Leavitt, founding director of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, died on October 14, 2010, at the age of 80. He also organized more than one hundred exhibitions, including Earth Art with Willoughby Sharp in 1969, and wrote numerous catalogue essays
  • Jack Levine, an American painter of Social Realism whose works contained biting satire and caricature, died on November 8, 2010, at the age of 95. His works can be found in major museums nationwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art
  • Bernd Lohaus, a German artist who created his sculptures with blocks of stone and rugged beams of Azobe wood, died on November 4, 2010. Born in 1940, he studied under Joseph Beuys and settled in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1966
  • Nathan Oliveira, a Bay Area painter who emerged in the 1950s as an Abstract Expressionist but later embraced figuration and landscape, died on November 13, 2010, at age 81. He was a longtime professor of art at Stanford University
  • Rozsika Parker, a pioneering British feminist, art historian, psychotherapist, and author of The Subversive Stitch: Embroidery and Making of the Feminine, died on November 5, 2010, at the age of 64. She collaborated with Griselda Pollock on two important books: Old Mistresses and Framing Women: Art and the Women’s Movement 1970–1985
  • Chuck Ramirez, an artist and graphic designer based in San Antonio who worked in large-scale photography and site-specific sculptural installations, died on November 6, 2010. He was 48
  • Sylvia Sleigh, a celebrated figurative painter and devoted feminist who helped found SOHO20 Gallery in 1973, died on October 24, 2010, at the age of 94. Born in Wales but based in New York since 1961, Sleigh received CAA’s Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2008
  • Miriam Wosk, an illustrator who designed the first cover of Ms. magazine in 1971 but later concentrated on painting, drawing, and collage, died on November 5, 2010. She was 63

CAA Announces the Shortlist for Its Two Book Awards

CAA is pleased to announce the finalists for the Charles Rufus Morey Book Award and the Alfred H. Barr Jr. Award for 2011. The winners of both prizes, along with the recipients of ten other Awards for Distinction, will be announced in December and presented in February during a special ceremony at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, in conjunction with the 99th Annual Conference and Centennial Kickoff.

The Charles Rufus Morey Book Award honors an especially distinguished book in the history of art, published in any language between September 1, 2009, and August 31, 2010. The four finalists are:

  • Molly Emma Aitken, The Intelligence of Tradition in Rajput Court Painting (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2010)
  • Çiğdem Kafescioğlu, Constantinopolis/Istanbul: Cultural Encounter, Imperial Vision, and the Construction of the Ottoman Capital (University Park: Pennsylvania State University Press, 2009)
  • Juliet Koss, Modernism after Wagner (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 2010)
  • Hui-shu Lee, Empresses, Art, and Agency in Song Dynasty China (Seattle: University of Washington Press, 2010)

The Alfred H. Barr Jr. Award for museum scholarship is presented to the author(s) of an especially distinguished catalogue in the history of art, published between September 1, 2009, and August 31, 2010, under the auspices of a museum, library, or collection. The three finalists are:

  • Mark Laird and Alicia Weisberg-Roberts, eds., Mrs. Delany and Her Circle (New Haven: Yale Center for British Art, in association with Yale University Press, 2009)

November 2010

Pamela Allara, associate professor emerita of contemporary art at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, has been appointed visiting researcher at the African Studies Center at Boston University from 2010 to 2012. Her research topic is “The Politics of Whiteness in South Africa’s Globalized Art World.”

Adrienne Der Marderosian, an artist based in Belmont, Massachusetts, has received a 2010 grant from the Belmont Cultural Council. The grant funded a recent exhibition of collage, New Works, that explores her fascination with found or existing imagery. By combining art-historical references with contemporary ones, Der Marderosian merges differing time frames to create a novel viewpoint.

Reni Gower has been recognized with the Distinguished Award in Painting for her work Pivot.6, which was included in Virginia Artists 2010 at the Charles H. Taylor Arts Center in Hampton, Virginia. The exhibition was held July 18–August 29, 2010.

Leslie Hewitt, an artist based in New York, has been awarded the fifth annual Joyce Alexander Wein Artist Prize by the Studio Museum in Harlem. The prize, which includes a $50,000 award, recognizes and honors the achievements of an African American artist who demonstrates great innovation.

Nina F. Martino has won the Audubon Artists Silver Medal of Honor at the Annual Exhibition 2010 for her oil painting Full Moon over Philadelphia. The exhibition took place September 13–October 1 at the Salmagundi Art Club Gallery in New York.

Lucy Freeman Sandler, the Helen Gould Sheppard Professor of Art History (emerita) at New York University, has been awarded a Mellon Foundation Emeritus Professor Fellowship for 2010 in order to complete a book, The Psalter and Hours of Humphrey de Bohun in the British Library: The Manuscript Patronage of a Fourteenth-Century Noble Family, to be published by the British Library.

Most people know Lynda Benglis from her infamous advertisement in the November 1974 Artforum, in which she stood completely nude holding a dildo at her crotch, but her career spans more than forty years. The traveling exhibition Lynda Benglis, now at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, presents the extraordinary creative output of an important but often overlooked artist, offering key and representative works: wax paintings and poured latex and polyurethane foam sculptures from the late 1960s; innovative videos, installations, and “knots” from the 1970s; metalized, pleated wall pieces of the next two decades; and twenty-first-century works such as The Graces, three monumental mixed-media sculptures. The exhibitionalso features documentary material underscoring the artist’s interest in performance and self-promotion through magazines and invitation cards.

National Women’s Studies Association Conference

Two sessions at this year’s National Women’s Studies Association Conference, both held on Friday, November 12, explore contemporary art and issues. Kryn Freehling-Burton of Oregon State University will moderate the morning panel, “Women and Public Art,” which offers presentations on Kara Walker and Lynda Benglis, and on “yarn bombing” and “knit graffiti” (8:00–9:15 AM). In the afternoon, four panelists will discuss “Rethinking Documentary and Experiment in Feminist Art from the 1970s,” moderated by Michael Eng of John Carroll University (5:10–6:25 PM). There, two papers cover Mary Kelly and Marina Abramović, with two more addressing broader themes.

“Fall Symposium: Focus on Women in Art”

This full-day symposium at the American Folk Art Museum, taking place 9:30 AM–5:00 PM, examines the changing roles of women in culture as seen through artworks of and by women. General topics for discussion include Renaissance women as art patrons and female artists in ancient Greece and Rome, along with specific focuses on American folk art by and about women, the artists Ruth Henshaw Bascom and Orra White Hitchcock, and American masterwork quilts. After the symposium, which is organized by Lee Kogana, the museum will present a theorem painting demonstration and a panel discussion.

Curated by Susan P. Schoelwer, Connecticut Needlework: Women, Art, and Family, 1740–1840 presents about seventy-five examples of rare, colorful, and imaginatively designed needlework by early American women and girls. Their shoes, purses, bedspreads, and fire screens depict farmsteads, family gatherings, furnished rooms, and flora. Resisting a strictly quaint presentation, the Connecticut Historical Society exhibition at the demonstrates that, in the words of a New York Times reviewer, “Young embroiderers … did not learn much at their mothers’ knees by the fireside, nor did they diligently copy designs that were fed to them.”

In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Connecticut River Valley produced an abundance of needlework artists—especially girls and young women in private academies. As the first exhibition to extensively examine the subject, With Needle and Brush contributes to the understanding of needlework traditions and provides insight into the nature of women’s schooling before widespread public education. Curated by Carol and Stephen Huber, the exhibition features about seventy works in embroidery and related mediums drawn extensively from private collections—many never before seen publicly.

Sally Mann: The Flesh and the Spirit

The American photographer Sally Mann specializes in obsolete film and darkroom processes, and her recent work at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, which includes abstracted self-portraits, pushes the limits of her medium to dig deeper into themes of mortality and vulnerability. Curated by John B. Ravenal, Sally Mann: The Flesh and the Spirit consists primarily of new photographs, but the museum will also present several early series that have rarely been seen. On Saturday, November 13, Vince Aletti of the New Yorker, Melissa Harris of Aperture, and Brian Wallis from the International Center of Photography will join Mann to discuss her work and the current state of photography. The conversation will take place 10:00 AM–1:00 PM on the show’s opening day, preceded by a book signing and coffee at 9:30 AM.

On September 21, the 2010 Award for Outstanding Commitment to the Preservation and Care of Collections was presented to the Office of the Architect of the Capitol by Pamela Hatchfield, vice president of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works board, and Mervin Richard, board chair of Heritage Preservation. More than sixty guests, including Architect of the Capitol staff, Congressional staff, and other distinguished guests, witnessed the award presentation, which took place at the US Capitol Visitors Center.

In accepting the award, Stephen T. Ayers, current architect of the Capitol, recognized the essential work of his staff and the invaluable support of the Congress. He closed his remarks by stating that “Every brick, every floor tile, every element of the US Capitol is saturated with over two hundred years of our nation’s art and history. As stewards of this remarkable facility, we will continue to protect and preserve so that we may, like our ancestors before us, pass this cultural legacy onto our children and their children for generations to come.” Following the presentation, Barbara Wolanin, curator of the Capitol, led a special tour that highlighted current and recent projects.

American Society of Hispanic Art Historical Studies

The American Society of Hispanic Art Historical Studies (ASHAHS) invites nominations for its annual Eleanor Tufts Award for a distinguished book in English on the history of art and architecture in Iberia. ASHAHS established the award in 1992 to honor Professor Tufts’ contributions to the study of Spanish art history. A PDF of the submission guidelines is available on the website. Deadline: December 15, 2010.

ASHAHS also invites its student members to apply for the Photographs Grant for those preparing an MA thesis or a doctoral dissertation on topics in the history of Spanish or Portuguese art and architecture, according to the procedure listed in the Fall 2010 newsletter.

Arts Council of the African Studies Association

The Arts Council of the African Studies Association (ACASA) seeks nominations and self-nominations for its board of directors. People interested in serving must be current ACASA members and should contact Jean Borgatti or Karen Milbourne for more information.

The fifteenth ACASA triennial symposium on African art, entitled “Africa and Its Diasporas in the Market Place: Cultural Resources and the Global Economy,” will be held at the University of California, Los Angeles, from March 23 to 26, 2011. The core theme will examine the current state of Africa’s cultural resources and the influence—for good or ill—of market forces both inside and outside the continent. Foundations in Art: Theory and Education and Mid-America College Art Association

Foundations in Art: Theory and Education (FATE) and the Mid-America College Art Association, another CAA affiliated society, will present a joint conference, called ON STREAM, at the Ball Park Hilton in St. Louis, Missouri. Taking place March 30–April 2, 2011, the conference will explore how artists and teachers develop and foster creativity in the second decade of the third millennium. Historians of British Art

The Historians of British Art (HBA) Travel Award is designated for an HBA graduate-student member who will present a paper on British visual culture at an academic conference in 2011. To be announced in December 2010, the $200 award is intended to offset travel costs during the next calendar year. To apply, please send a letter of request, a copy of the acceptance letter from the conference session’s organizer, an abstract of your paper, a budget of estimated expenses (noting what items may be covered by other resources), and a CV to Pamela Fletcher, HBA prize committee chair. Deadline: December 1, 2010.

HBA also invites applications for its 2011 publication grant, which awards up to $500 to offset the publication costs of, or to support additional research for, a journal article or book manuscript in the field of British visual culture that has been accepted by a publisher. Applicants must be current HBA members. To apply, send a five-hundred-word project description, the name of the journal or press, a projected publication date, a budget, and a CV to Renate Dohmen, HBA prize committee chair. National Council of Arts Administrators

National Council of Arts Administrators

The annual conference of the National Council of Arts Administrators (NCAA) will be held November 17–20, 2010. Hosted by the University of Texas at Austin, the conference will focus on “Passages, Portals, and Potholes: How to Maintain Excellence with Diminishing Resources.” Every year the NCAA conference offers great venues, terrific opportunities for networking and dialogue, and new directions for creative leadership, education, and practice. Considering limp economic progress and the looming “cliff” that is the end of stimulus funding, this year’s conference should prove useful to all aspiring and current arts administrators. Private Art Dealers Association

The Private Art Dealers Association (PADA) has awarded the seventeenth annual PADA Award to the Hispanic Society of America, located in New York. The award was presented at the annual PADA dinner on November 8, 2010. Master Drawings Association received the award in 2009, and the Frick Art Reference Library was recognized in 2008.

The Radical Art Caucus (RAC) is gearing up to celebrate its tenth birthday at the upcoming CAA Annual Conference in New York. Society for Photographic Education

The Society for Photographic Education (SPE) forty-eighth national conference, called “Science, Poetry, and the Photographic Image,” will examine the confluence of the ideologies of scientists and poets in the context of photography. To be held March 10–13, 2011, at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel in Georgia, the conference will feature presentations from artists, educators, historians, and curators, as well as one-on-one portfolio critiques and informal portfolio sharing, a print raffle and silent auction, and film screenings, exhibitions, tours, and receptions. Speakers include Abelardo Morell, Catherine Wagner, Carolyn Guertin, and Justine Cooper. Student volunteers receive discounted admission.

Southeastern College Arts Conference

The Southeastern College Arts Conference (SECAC) will hold its sixty-seventh annual meeting November 9–12, 2011, hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia. The conference headquarters will be the DeSoto Hilton Hotel, located in the heart of historic Savannah. Featuring extensive panels and sessions for the exchange of ideas and concerns relevant to the practice and study of art, the conference will include the annual awards luncheon and the fourteenth annual members’ exhibition, as well as offer a rich array of tours, workshops, and evening events. Dan Cameron, founding director of Prospect New Orleans, will present a plenary address and jury the SECAC members’ exhibition, to be held at one of SCAD’s premier venues. The Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA) has announced the 2011 recipients of its Lifetime Achievement Awards: Beverly Buchanan, Diane Burko, Ofelia Garcia, Joan Marter, Carolee Schneemann, and Sylvia Sleigh. In addition, Maria Torres has been named recipient of the 2011 President’s Art and Activism Award. The awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011, during the annual WCA and CAA conferences in New York. Free and open to the public, the ceremony will take place from 6:00 to 7:30 PM in the Beekman/Sutton rooms at the Hilton New York, followed by a ticketed gala from 8:00 to 10:00 PM at the nearby American Folk Art Museum. Called LIVE SPACE, the gala will include a walk-around gourmet dinner with three food stations and an open bar, as well as the opportunity to meet the award recipients, network with attendees, and tour the museum. Ticket prices for LIVE SPACE are $75 for WCA members and $135 for nonmembers (Prices will increase after January 12). CAA members receive a special price of $120. The Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas, has received a Museums for America grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The $150,000 award supports the Access to American Photography initiative, which will allow the museum to digitize and catalogue nearly twenty-five thousand photographs from its collection.

The Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York has received subsequent accreditation from the American Association of Museums (AAM). The honor signifies that the museum has undergone a rigorous, lengthy process of self-examination and peer review, and has been subsequent approved by AAM’s Accreditation Commission.

Kennesaw State University (KSU) in Kennesaw, Georgia, has accepted a $2 million pledge to build an art museum that will house the school’s permanent collection. To receive a $1 million pledge from Bernard A. Zuckerman, a former carpet-industry executive, KSU must raise at least $1 million of its own in the next nine months.

The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore has announced several new academic programs that have just started or will launch soon: an MFA in community arts (2010); an MPS in the business of art and design (May 2011); an MFA in curatorial practice (fall 2011); an MFA in illustration practice (fall 2011); an MA in social design (in development, fall 2011); and an integrated double-major BFA in humanistic studies and studio discipline (fall 2011).

The National Gallery of Australia in Canberra has welcomed a $7 million gift from the Melbourne philanthropist Pauline Gandel and John Gandel AO. The donation will help develop the national art collection for future generations of Australians. Further, the newly named Gandel Hall will host openings, special events, public programs, and school and educational activities.

The New Orleans Museum of Art in Louisiana has received subsequent accreditation from the American Association of Museums (AAM).
