Deadline: Wed, January 1st, 2020

The Athena Standards Residency, in vibrant, urban Athens, Greece is accepting applications for its 2020 residency sessions. Each residency session lasts a minimum of one month. Please visit our applications page on our website to apply online: https://www.athenastandardsresidency.com/registration

The Athena Standards Residency fee of 1500 Euro/ month provides the artist with an open format studio in an expansive, repurposed commercial building in downtown Athens and shared housing with another residency artist in proximity to the studio. As part of the residency artists meet regularly with Elizabeth Plessa and staff to ensure a guided and comprehensive introduction to the contemporary Athenian art scene.

Professional development is integral to the Athena Standards Residency program. Art Historian and Curator Elizabeth Plessa works closely with each artist, scheduling individual studio visits and building off those initial consultations to recommend galleries of interest, openings, and museum shows for the artist to attend.

The spacious, open-format studios have abundant natural light, and the studio floor includes a communal woodshop/ project space, storage room, kitchenette and lounge, and 24/7 key card access. In the project space we offer two weekly workshops; in ceramics and mold-making. Giorgos Tserionis, an artist and instructor of ceramics at the School of Fine Arts Athens, leads a course in hand building and wheel throwing and studio manager and sculptor Orestis Karalis conducts a workshop in mold making and casting. The lounge includes a projector and we encourage artists to get together for a weekly dinner, wine and presentation of work. Athena Standards also provides studio space for Athenian artists and recent graduates of the Athens School of Fine Arts, to encourage dialogue and collaboration between Greek artists and international artists-in-residence.

The artist is housed in shared apartments in Athens, in proximity to the Athena Standards Studio building, with another artist-in-residence. Additionally, we provide a metro pass to encourage exploring the city and all it has to offer.

We are able to accommodate 12 artists per month. We open all monthly sessions within the year to applications, and reviews of applicants are conducted regularly. We encourage residents to consider staying for two months or longer, in order to develop a deeper knowledge of the city.
