Lunder Institute Research Symposium Travel Grants

The Lunder Institute for American Art is pleased to offer travel grants of up to $500 to graduate students wishing to attend the Lunder Institute Research Symposium: Art by African Americans on March 12-13, 2020, at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

 

On the evening of Thursday, March 12, the Lunder Institute and the Colby College Museum of Art will host a conversation between renowned artist David C. Driskell and Curlee R. Holton of the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora at the University of Maryland, College Park. Presentations by the Lunder Institute Research Fellows, invited speakers, and members of the Colby community will take place throughout the day on Friday, March 13. Confirmed speakers include Anna Arabindan-Kesson, Princeton University; Adrienne L. Childs, Harvard University; Tuliza Fleming, National Museum of African American History and Culture; Jacqueline Francis, California College of the Arts; Melanee Harvey, Howard University; Key Jo Lee, Cleveland Museum of Art; Tess Korobkin, University of Maryland, College Park; John Ott, James Madison University; James Smalls, University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Diana Tuite, Colby College Museum of Art; and Rebecca VanDiver, Vanderbilt University. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Masters or doctoral program in Art History, American Studies, African American Studies, or a related field. 

 

To be considered for a travel grant, please submit the following as a single PDF:

-       1-page cover letter explaining how attending the symposium would benefit the applicant’s research, teaching, and/or curatorial projects; a statement of financial need; and an estimated travel budget

-       CV of no more than 3 pages

Questions about the application process should also be directed to Dr. Batario. Grant recipients will be notified by January 31, 2020, and will be responsible for making their own travel arrangements.
