AJS PERSPECTIVES | CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: THE ART ISSUE

The Fall 2021 issue of AJS Perspectives, titled “The Art Issue,” will be devoted to examining Jewish visual art, broadly defined, around the globe from antiquity to the present, and to continuing the much-parsed interrogation of the category of “Jewish art” itself. The editors invite contributions of four types: a) short essays from within any part of Jewish Studies broadly defined; b) short commentaries about a given work of art; c) original artwork accompanied by a short interpretive artist statement; d) collaborations between artists and scholars. Questions to be addressed in essays and commentaries may include the relationship between art and politics, ideas, or religion in Jewish contexts, and how art functions within Jewish cultures, communities, and societies. Essays on pedagogy (e.g., the role of art in Jewish Studies teaching) and on the profession (e.g., the place of studio practice, theatre, dance, performance studies and art history within the field of Jewish Studies; visual representation in Jewish Studies artifacts and ephemera -- book covers, academic program logos, conference programs, etc.) are also highly encouraged.

Completed essays should be 1,000 words; commentaries and statements 500-750 words.

We aim to promote a diversity of voices including career stage, socio-economic situation, gender, religion, race, sexuality, and ability. As such, you are invited to include relevant aspects of whatever subjectivity or positionality may inform your writing.

Deadline for abstracts/pitches (up to 250 words): April 21, 2021

Please submit your pitch/abstract along with the introductory paragraph of your proposed essay here:
