CALL FOR SECAC SESSION: Teaching Art History with Artificial Intelligence

At the the onset of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Art History is at another moment of transition. Our students’ writing, oral communication, and critical thinking skills, which are essential components of our pedagogical mission, have been suffering for years, receiving an additional strike most recently by the forced isolation of the pandemic. Not long after faculty have tried to adapt to the sudden change, the emergence of AI started pushing us in yet another direction. Art History will need to come to terms with a new technology that will transform the way we think. Chatbots could potentially become virtual assistants for at-risk students, by coaching them on writing, critical thinking, professional skills like time management through our Art History content and assignments. How can chatbots be used to strengthen students’ analysis and communication skills, and/or aid Art History faculty in designing class lectures, discussion prompts, tests, assignments rubrics, guidelines, feedback, or other elements of teaching? How can we promote ethical and responsible use of AI among students? We welcome a variety of faculty backgrounds and approaches.
