Call for applications for the Prix Marianne Roland Michel
In memory of Marianne Roland Michel, an eminent art historian, her family has set up a prize, now awarded every two years, to support the publication of manuscripts which are a continuation of her work.
The prize is awarded to a book that makes an original contribution and is more than just a collection of documentation even if it is new (catalogue, archive sources, etc.). Any type of manuscript may be received, as long as it is submitted in a publishable form. PhD dissertations must be reworked to ensure that the deliberation concerns a publishable manuscript. The language must be French or English.
The prize may also be awarded to a manuscript written in a language other than French or English for its translation and publication into French, or to an important book published in the last fifteen years in a language other than French or English, whose translation into French would fill an awkward gap.
Manuscripts may not be submitted more than twice.
Submitted works should cover the following themes:
- 18th century French artists
- Artistic productions associated with the rocaille
- The graphic arts
- The still life
- Landscape painting
- Artists’ travels and the transfer of models
- Collections and the art trade
This list is not exclusive, but the winning manuscript must relate to the 18th century (in a broader chronology, from around 1680 to 1820). In the eventuality of several manuscripts having the same scientific and editorial qualities, preference will be given to those most specifically related to Marianne Roland Michel’s areas of interest.
Value of the prize
The prize is fourteen thousand euros. One thousand five hundred euros will be given to the winner, and twelve thousand five hundred euros will be paid directly to the publisher upon publication.
If no manuscript is deemed satisfactory by the jury, the prize will be placed in reserve and attributed at the following session, or at a later date if at the next one there are no two apposite manuscripts to be awarded. Under no circumstances will the prize be awarded by default.
In the event of hesitation between two excellent manuscripts, when there are no prizes in reserve, the choice will be made in favor of the one closest to eighteenth-century French art and to the interests of Marianne Roland Michel.
Manuscripts, accompanied by a C.V., should be sent by the 22nd of June 2025 to Professor Olivier Bonfait, President of the Comité français d’Histoire de l’art: olivier.bonfait@u-bourgogne.fr
Additional conditions
The title page of the published book must include the words Prix Marianne Roland Michel and the year of the prize and a page concerning the prize (which will be provided) has to be joined.
The manuscript must be published within five years of winning the prize.
Ten copies will be given to the Marianne and Roland Michel Foundation.
