Description:

A painting is a construct. The painter uses a combination of color, value, and mark-making to organize the surface of a work. In this workshop, we will craft paintings with a focus on creating zones. This will allow the painter to identify and organize the painting into large shape areas: thinking first of light, dark, warm, and cool and then moving to hue, chroma, and texture.

Identifying a simple structure makes it possible to succeed in creating a complex painting. Beginning and intermediate painters sometimes assume deft rendering or virtuoso paint handling holds the key to unlocking greater possibilities in their work. More commonly, a convincing large-shaped structure is what is lacking in their paintings.

This workshop is for beginning, intermediate, and advanced painters interested in a gestalt approach to planning and painting landscapes and interior spaces. Students will benefit from slide lectures, individual instruction, and critique.

Key Workshop Objectives:

• Reduce visual information to create legible big-shape compositions.
• Identify zones in nature to assist in building a painting.
• Increase understanding of paint handling.
• Increase understanding of color by studying value and saturation.
• Continue to develop a personal sense of color and expression.
• Develop a “hierarchy of light” in compositions.

Level of Study: This workshop is suggested for individuals with some painting experience. Basic knowledge of oil painting is recommended.
