The Power of Abstraction

Online Exhibition September 27, 2024 - October 27, 2024

The Power of Abstraction seeks to highlight the continued importance of abstract art in our present moment. From its various highpoints in the 20th-century, abstract art has had to contend with not only the resurgence of figurative and representational works, but also the development of digital art. However, it still possesses a unique and compelling power to organize light, material, color, space, and form in surprising ways. The impetus for abstraction, the inadequacy of representation to capture new reality is no less a pressing force than it was a century ago. Site:Brooklyn is seeking works that continue to develop the visual language of abstraction.

About the Juror: Alexandra Terry is the Curator of Contemporary Art at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe, where she contributes to the exhibition program at the new Vladem Contemporary building, in addition to overseeing the Artist-in-Residence program, and the Digital Window for film and video. Previously, she served as Chief Curator at Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara (MCASB), and held the position of Curator & Artistic Director at MOP Foundation, a London-based nonprofit dedicated to contemporary Iranian artists. She has curated solo exhibitions of artists including Shana Moulton, Barry McGee, Genevieve Gaignard, and Rosha Yaghmai, as well as group exhibitions featuring Simone Forti, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Narsiso Martinez, and Tania Candiani among others. Terry holds an MFA in Curating from Goldsmiths, University of London, UK, and a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

About the Gallery: Site:Brooklyn Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting the current practice of contemporary artists. We are taking Site:Brooklyn online with a new series of interactive exhibitions. Our goal remains the same, to connect artists with an expert and diverse set of jurors through the open call format. Our new program focuses on online open call exhibitions, selected by a cast of new jurors, solo artist features, and spotlights.
