Mudhouse 2025 Early Acceptance General Application

Type: Residencies, Workshops, Exchanges [View all]
Posted by: Mudhouse Residency
Deadline: Sun, December 1st, 2024

The Mudhouse is an artist residency located in the village of Agios Ioannis on the Island of Crete, Greece. The Mudhouse Residency aims to provide artists inspiration derived from an engagement with the stunning natural beauty of its environment, solitude to foster creative growth, an artistic community to enrich professional practices, and an immersive cultural experience within a profoundly rich historical context.

Started in 2015 and now in its tenth year, the Mudhouse offers its two-week residency sessions each summer for international contemporary artists working across a manifold of artistic disciplines, from paint, to ceramics, to experimental film. We welcome visual artists, writers, musicians and performers. Hosting an incredibly diverse, multicultural, multi-generational cohort of artists in each residency session, the Mudhouse encourages dialogues across traditional boundaries. Artists are invited to present a slideshow, lecture or reading on their work for fellow residents, as well as participate in a closing exhibition at the Residency’s conclusion that will be installed jointly in the ruins around the village and the exhibition space. The artists’ time is their own, to focus on their art practice and explore the rich history of southern Crete and the Minoan civilization.

The Mudhouse Residency provides accommodations, studio space, and two meals each day for the two week duration of the residency, in the village of Agios Ioannis, on the Greek island of Crete.

As an artist founded and operated residency, the Mudhouse’s ethos continues to be to provide an increasingly diverse group of artists an affordable, international residency experience. Determined by a selection committee, Full Fellowship Awards are based on the merit of the applicants work while Partial Fellowships are need based.

The residency fee includes accommodations, studio space and two meals each day for the two week duration of the residency. The artist is responsible for their own travel to the residency, and daily stipend for any groceries, art supplies or excursions outside of the village. Artists who are able to pay the full residency fee may select to pay $4200 in their application. Artists who require a partial fellowship to attend may select to be considered for a partial fellowship, for a residency fee of $3400. Artists who need financial aid in addition to the partial fellowship may select to be considered for the $2600 residency fee, and will be asked to perform a job during their residency session. Residency jobs include studio maintenance, exhibition crew and tech assistance. 1/3 of the residencies each year are partially funded and 1/3 of the residencies each year are partially funded with an additional stipend.
