The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Buddhism Public Scholar Competition Now Accepting Applications

Initiative Places Emerging Scholars of Buddhism in Professional Positions

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is pleased to announce the opening of the Buddhism Public Scholars in Buddhist Studies competition, an initiative made possible by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Global. Applications for the competition must be submitted by January 23, 2025, 9:00 PM EST.

This year marks the first time we are able to offer a Buddhism Public Scholar position at an international host organization: The Courtauld Institute of Art in London, UK. This addition will open eligibility to more members of our global community of Buddhist Studies scholars, as well as increase capacity in Buddhist art and thought at one of the world’s most prestigious, research-led colleges and art institutions.

In 2025, ACLS will place up to five early-career scholars of Buddhism in one-year professional positions with host institutions that present and interpret knowledge of Buddhist traditions. The selected Buddhism Public Scholars will use their academic knowledge and professional experience to bolster the capacity of libraries, museums, and publications in Buddhist art and thought in any tradition and location where Buddhism is practiced.

Organizations participating in the fourth year of the competition are:

American Museum of Natural History (New York, NY)

The Courtauld Institute of Art (London, UK)

Detroit Institute of the Arts (Detroit, MI)

Minneapolis Institute of Art (Minneapolis, MN)

Richard C. Rudolph East Asian Library, University of California, Los Angeles (Los Angeles, CA)

Wisdom Publications (New York, NY)

For US-based host institutions, fellows will receive compensation of up to $75,000, including a stipend (approximately $65,000), an allowance of up to $5,000 for relocation, and up to $5,000 for research, travel, home office expenses, or professional development.  In addition, fellows will have access to health insurance through the host institutions.

For the Courtauld Institute of Art, fellows will receive compensation of up to 48,000 GBP and allowances up to 9,000 GBP for relocation and/or research and professional development expenses (total award of up to 57,000 GBP).

Applicants for the Buddhism Public Scholars competition must have a PhD in the humanities or interpretive social sciences conferred between September 1, 2019 and June 30, 2025. All scholars must be authorized to work legally in the United States for US-based host institutions or must have the right to work in the United Kingdom for the Courtauld Institute of Art.

Applications will be accepted only through the ACLS online application system. Applicants should not contact any of the host institutions directly.

Formed a century ago, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is a nonprofit federation of 81 scholarly organizations. As the leading representative of American scholarship in the humanities and interpretive social sciences, ACLS upholds the core principle that knowledge is a public good. In supporting its member organizations, ACLS expands the forms, content, and flow of scholarly knowledge, reflecting our commitment to diversity of identity and experience. ACLS collaborates with institutions, associations, and individuals to strengthen the evolving infrastructure for scholarship. In all aspects of our work, ACLS is committed to principles and practices in support of racial and social justice.

Inspired and informed by the concept of interconnectedness, The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Global supports programs in arts and culture and Buddhism, and funds initiatives that enhance the wellbeing of humanity and the environment
