Exploration of Color
Online Exhibition January 3, 2025 - February 3, 2025
Color is both a representation or symbol of something else and a subject in its own right. There is a certain mystery to color – its power, effect, and centrality – in the history of art. It is something extensively studied, put into practice, and viewed without ever truly being known. Color is universal (and the effect of its absence) are near universal, but artists’ relationship with it is far from uniform. The Venetian school of Renaissance prized the power colorito, “coloring” to create vital and glowing images. Helen Frankenthaler’s “soak-stain” paintings washed the canvas in incredible arrays of color. Almost all periods of art have used color, to recreate reality, enhance it, or transcend it altogether. Site:Brooklyn is looking for work that explores and harnesses color today.
About the Juror: Anna Mikaela Ekstrand mediates art through curating, writing, and public relations. She is the founding editor-in-chief of Cultbytes and serves as the Associate Director of The Immigrant Artist Biennial and co-curated its 2023 edition. Her latest books are Assuming Asymmetries: Conversations on Curating Public Art Projects of the 1980s and 1990s and Curating Beyond the Mainstream both published by Sternberg Press.
She is Guyanese-Swedish-American and holds dual Master’s Degrees in Art and Design History from Stockholm University and Bard Graduate Center. Currently, Ekstrand is enrolled in PhD programs at Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and University of Ljubljana. She would love to be in touch: @shrimp__sandwich @cultbytes or cultbytes.com.
About the Gallery: Site:Brooklyn Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting the current practice of contemporary artists. We are taking Site:Brooklyn online with a new series of interactive exhibitions. Our goal remains the same, to connect artists with an expert and diverse set of jurors through the open call format. Our new program focuses on online open call exhibitions, selected by a cast of new jurors, solo artist features, and spotlights.
