Abstract Submission Deadline: Jan 31, 2025
Notification of Acceptance: Feb 15, 2025
The 21st annual symposium of art history will be hosted by Art History Student Association (AHSA) of University of Oregon on April 18, 2025. We invite global graduate students to submit proposals for our upcoming symposium “Creating Visual Culture: The New Poetics of Mass Surveillance.”
Surveillance has become deeply embedded in our daily lives. The modern panoptic system is both externalized in the omni-present physical apparatus of the camera and internalized such that one can no longer assume that a lens is not somewhere, unseen, capturing private activity. Artists are responding by creating a new visual poetics, one that asks for a critical engagement but also engages in epistemological production.
This symposium seeks to explore the intersections of surveillance technologies and its impact on visual culture and human agency. Can visual culture transcend the surveillance system, rather than simply interpreting and deconstructing it? How does surveillance shape our visions, actions, artistic practices, spaces, and cultural narratives? What legacy can art and art history derive from the poetics of surveillance?
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
- Art and Technology
- Visual Art and Activism
- Global and Decolonial Perspectives
- Power and Space
- Art, Philosophy and Surveillance
- Media and Representation
- Surveillance and Identity
Submission Guidelines:
Please submit a 300-word abstract, a paper title and an up-to-date CV by Jan 31, 2025 to uosymposium@gmail.com. Accepted papers will be presented in 15–20 minutes, followed by Q&A discussions. We welcome submissions from a variety of disciplines, including fine art, art history, visual studies, media and cinema studies, history, sociology, anthropology, philosophy and political science.
