Berger Trust Future Leaders Fellowship in the History of British Art

at The Huntington and Trinity Hall, Cambridge

The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Garden and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, announce the Future Leaders Fellowship in the History of British Art, with the support of the Berger Collection Educational Trust. The Fellow will be provided with a stipend of $50,000 intended to buy them out of normal professional duties for ten months, during which time they will have periods of residence both at The Huntington and in Cambridge. Up to $12,000 will be provided to cover economy round-trip travel and health insurance costs.

The history of British art is understood here to extend to the traditions of visual culture not only in the United Kingdom but also in the contexts of the British Empire, of the Commonwealth, and of post-Commonwealth nations.

The broad aim of the Fellowship is to enrich and diversify the history of British art by supporting its future leaders: providing scholars and museum professionals of exceptional promise and demonstrable achievement with dedicated research time in which to develop new projects and outputs, and in which to develop their career.

The Fellowship will make available to the successful candidate the exceptional resources of each institution for the study of British art, providing also an international platform for the dissemination of their research.

Eligibility is restricted to either:

Faculty members in the first seven years of appointment in an institution of higher education anywhere in the world;

Curators in the first seven years of their appointment in an art gallery or museum anywhere in the world.

Application Procedure

Eligible candidates must be nominated by their head of department (or equivalent) who should make the case that the Fellowship would: facilitate high-quality research on the basis of the collections at The Huntington and in Cambridge; and

materially enhance the professional development of the appointee in respect of their subsequent research, exhibition planning, and/or teaching.

Nominations of no more than 1,000 words should be accompanied by the candidate’s CV and by one letter of recommendation from a scholar of the history of British art.

Self-nominations are not permitted.

Conditions

The Fellowship is tenable for 10 months, 1 September, 2025, to 30 June, 2026.

The appointee is expected to spend one Cambridge Term (Michaelmas; Lent; or Easter) in residence in Cambridge, where they would be made a Visiting Fellow of Trinity Hall (with membership of the Senior Combination Room, dining rights, and access to all relevant University resources, including Libraries and Museums).

The appointee is expected to spend the remainder of the Fellowship at The Huntington, where they will be provided with all the usual privileges of a long-term research fellow in residence.

Residential accommodation will not be provided by either the Huntington or Trinity Hall, but assistance in finding suitable housing will be offered by each institution.

The appointee is expected to deliver one public lecture/talk at each institution during their Fellowship.
