“Nature Morte”: Call for Video Art
Type: Exhibition Opportunities [View all]
Posted by: Bucknell University
Deadline: Fri, March 7th, 2025
“Nature Morte” will reimagine the still-life tradition through the lens of video art, where digital works unravel fleeting moments of beauty and decay. Selected works will be exhibited in the 103, a small gallery programmed by the Department of Art & Art History at Bucknell University, in the summer of 2025. The videos will be displayed in a loop that will play on a single large horizontally-oriented TV in the gallery.
Still-life paintings freeze time, and make time visible. They hinge on the representation of everyday objects to memorialize, to stand in as symbols of bigger issues and phenomena, and to meditate on time, light, and mortality. For those willing to slow their pace and read into the layers, the still-life becomes a record of labor and the artist’s hand. “Nature Morte” will reflect on the legacy of traditional still-life – and its multi-layered connections to time, authorship, mortality, and symbolism – through contemporary works of video art that reference and challenge traditional, truly still, forms of still-life.
This exhibition invites video works that are inspired by, expand on, or reimagine conventional still-life themes including – but not limited to – the fleetingness of time; ephemerality vs. permanence; youth vs. old age; the symbolism of objects; metonymy; narratives of globalization; memorialization; etc, or the reinterpretation of still-life in new and unexpected ways. Artists are encouraged to submit works that are experimental, push boundaries and/or challenge a conventional understanding of still-life in the digital age. “Nature Morte” seeks to engage with diverse perspectives and innovative approaches, fostering a dialogue between the enduring legacy of still-life and the dynamic possibilities of video art.
