ABOUT MUDHOUSE:
The Mudhouse is an artist residency located in the village of Agios Ioannis on the Island of Crete, Greece. The Mudhouse Residency aims to provide artists inspiration derived from an engagement with the stunning natural beauty of its environment, solitude to foster creative growth, an artistic community to enrich professional practices, and an immersive cultural experience within a profoundly rich historical context.

Started in 2015 and now in its tenth year, the Mudhouse offers its two-week residency sessions each summer for international contemporary artists working across a manifold of artistic disciplines, from paint, to ceramics, to experimental film. We welcome visual artists, writers, musicians and performers. Hosting an incredibly diverse, multicultural, multi-generational cohort of artists in each residency session, the Mudhouse encourages dialogues across traditional boundaries. Artists are invited to present a slideshow, lecture or reading on their work for fellow residents, as well as participate in a closing exhibition at the Residency’s conclusion that will be installed jointly in the ruins around the village and the exhibition space. The artists’ time is their own, to focus on their art practice and explore the rich history of southern Crete and the Minoan civilization.

The Mudhouse Residency provides accommodations, studio space, and two meals each day for the two week duration of the residency, in the village of Agios Ioannis, on the Greek island of Crete.

As an artist founded and operated residency, the Mudhouse’s ethos continues to be to provide an increasingly diverse group of artists an affordable, international residency experience. Determined by a selection committee, Full Fellowship Awards are based on the merit of the applicants work while Partial Fellowships are need based.

Duration of residency

Two weeks. We will be holding two residency sessions in 2025; the first session will be June 16-June 30, and the second will be July 7-July 21

Accommodation

Accommodations for the duration of the residency, to begin on the first day of the residency session and conclude on the last day of the residency period. Artists are provided a private bedroom, a private or shared bathroom with no more than one other artist, and a shared kitchen within the house. Residences will be professionally cleaned before the artist arrives, and once while the Artist is in residence. Linens are provided.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance

The residency program is ideal for professional artists with an established practice seeking the time and space to realize an individual project. The residency includes 24 hr access to a spacious studio facility, practice space with athletic flooring, or access to the Music house grand piano, depending on the artist’s discipline. We welcome writers, photographers and filmmakers as well, as our residency provides the time and structure to focus on a non-studio based project.  The residency is inclusive to a number of artistic disciplines, with the facilities to accommodate studio artists, painters, printmakers, filmmakers, ceramicists, fiber artists, photographers, writers, poets, dancers, musicians, choreographers and composers.  The Mudhouse has easels, tables, chairs, odorless turpentine, linseed oil, jars, rags and eco cleaning supplies for common use.

Studio / Workspace

Mudhouse provides artists with a shared workspace within its premises at the Mudhouse Studio, in the village of Agios Ioannis, Crete. Should the Artist need specific studio space to realize the work described in their proposal, such as access to a music room or performance space, MH will make an effort to provide the Artist access. Should the Artist request additional studio space beyond the facilities MH offers, such as access to a ceramics facility and kiln, to realize work, MH will attempt to identify a suitable location and communicate the facility usage/ rental cost of this space. The Artist will continue to have access to MH’s shared workspace in the event that MH arranges a separate work/studio space

Fees and support

Artists who are able to pay the full residency fee may select to pay $4200 in their application. Artists who require a partial fellowship to attend may select to be considered for a partial fellowship, for a residency fee of $3400. Artists who need financial aid in addition to the partial fellowship may select to be considered for the $2600 residency fee, and will be asked to perform a job during their residency session. Residency jobs include studio maintenance, exhibition crew and tech assistance. 1/3 of the residencies each year are partially funded and 1/3 of the residencies each year are partially funded with an additional stipend.
