CALL FOR ART!
I’m an indepentent curator (https://saraharriagada.com/) currently planning a group exhibit for Westwerk in Hamburg (https://www.westwerk.org/) for the fall of 2026. I’m researching artistic positions on the topic of the SACRED TRICKSTER.
If you think that your work relates to this topic and you’d like to submit it for consideration, please reach out to me by May 1 at contact@saraharriagada.com with a PDF featuring up to 5 relevant images–incl. title, year, materials, and measurements–your contact info, a short bio, and a short statement on how your work relates to the exhibition theme. No fees.
I’ll be able to share more details about the show once I’ve applied for funding–this will take several months. Thank you for your patience.
On the exhibition theme:
The trickster archetype is a universal symbol found in myths and stories across cultures, embodying chaos, subversion, and cunning. The trickster challenges the status quo, often employing humor and betrayal to disrupt order, resulting in profound personal or societal transformation and insight. It functions as both creator and destroyer, bringing about unexpected consequences, and revealing deeper truths about humanity.
In Native American stories, Coyote and Raven, among others, embody the essence of the sacred trickster, guiding us through unforeseen detours that, when surrendered to, foster growth and deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world. With its energy of divine deception, the trickster liberates us from constraints that no longer serve our highest purpose. It orchestrates challenges to prepare us for what lies ahead, and illustrates how chaos can catalyze creativity and innovation. In everyday life, we might encounter the trickster through a person, group of people, societal movement or–often interrelated–our own shadow: unhealed versions of self, limiting beliefs, illusions, and other clouded states of consciousness. The trickster archetype is both inherently elusive and inescapable.
This exhibition invites us to explore the shadowy realms of our existence, offering diverse perspectives on this uncanny phenomenon: the realization that life is fleeting and unpredictable and that the human condition is entangled in a web of unknowable truths.
