m(other)ing: Call for Creative Works! (James Madison University Exhibition 10/29-12/3/2025)

Type: Exhibition Opportunities [View all]
Posted by: James Madison University
Deadline: Sun, June 15th, 2025

In conjunction with the Boundless Bound Symposium and Art Book Fair at James Madison University, the m(other)ing exhibition is now accepting submissions for its second iteration at the Duke Hall Gallery. Aligned with Boundless Bound Publishing’s mission to amplify underrepresented voices through innovative publishing and redefine storytelling as a catalyst for artistic and social change, this exhibition creates space for designers and creators to explore the diverse and complex narratives of motherhood and reproductive journeys.

We are particularly interested in works that engage with both traditional and non-traditional publishing practices. This includes printed matter, such as artist books and zines, as well as works that explore publishing in virtual spaces (which could be displayed on a screen or with a projector in the gallery). We seek submissions that challenge conventional definitions and explore new ways to engage with social issues.

We invite work that addresses themes such as female reproductive health, infertility, transgender and non-binary parenting, pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum experiences, motherhood, parenthood, and the decision to live childfree. m(other)ing aims to elevate these often overlooked or politicized experiences, offering a platform for creators whose work may not traditionally find space within design research.

We are especially interested in artist books and zines that merge textual, visual, and material elements to create immersive and interactive experiences that provoke personal reflection and engagement. Works exploring publishing practices in virtual spaces are also welcome, contributing to the narrative and conceptual depth of the exhibition while expanding the possibilities of traditional publishing practices.

By submitting to m(other)ing, you are joining a publishing practice to legitimize reproductive journeys within academic, research-informed spaces, shedding light on work that has historically been marginalized. We encourage creators to experiment with innovative approaches that challenge and expand the definition of publishing practices, whether through print, digital, or hybrid forms.

Submission Guidelines:

Works may include, but are not limited to: Artist books Zines Works of non-traditional publishing practices in virtual space (which could be displayed on a screen or with a projector in the gallery) Submissions should engage with the exhibition’s themes and push the boundaries of publishing practices. All submitted works must be original and created by the applicant. Submission deadline: June 15th.

We look forward to seeing how your work redefines reproductive journeys through diverse publishing practices!
