CFP: Textile Production and Representation: From Pre-to Postmodernity

Confirmed Keynote: Joanne Turney (University of Southampton), The Culture of Knitting

Proposals are invited for a two-day, interdisciplinary conference to be held at the Netherlands Institute, Athens, Greece, May 7-8, 2026, on textile production and representation from the premodern period to the present.

Contributions on historical and contemporary textile production, from harvesting materials (i.e. wool, linen, wood fiber, recycled materials, plastics), to processing, creation and design are welcome, as well as proposals that address uses of textiles and how they circulate through private or domestic economies, industry, and markets. Contributions on the above topics and their representation in various media, from painting and sculpture to literature and film, to the use of textiles in political activism, are also welcome. In taking an interdisciplinary approach to textiles and allowing for extended historical perspectives on their production, our goal is to foster discussion that brings to light new connections between modes of production and ways of thinking about them at various junctures over several centuries.

Possible topics including but are not limited to:

Wool production in ancient Greece and the ancient world

Textile trade in early modern Europe

Indigenous textile production in the colonized world

Weaving and narrative

Cultures of knitting

Wartime knitting

Knitting and the gift economy

Knitting and detective fiction

Amigurumi and anthropomorphism

Coding and textiles

Labour/Leisure: Craft/Art

Textiles in ritual
