Prospect Art invites visual artists worldwide to apply for the 2027 NEW WORK / ONE WORK Open Call under the curatorial theme We Come in Pieces, developed by 2026–2027 Curatorial Fellow Alma Sammel.

What if the Alien is not a being, but a position? A way of listening from elsewhere?

We Come in Pieces explores estrangement, shared planetary belonging, and perspectives beyond the human. The open call welcomes projects that challenge familiar ways of seeing, sensing, and knowing, and that explore relationships between human and more than human worlds. Rather than treating the Alien as an Other, the program approaches alienness as a method for shifting perspective and imagining new forms of relation.

The project is particularly interested in forms of agency that exceed the human. Satellites and orbital debris, fungal networks, oceans, atmospheric systems, and algorithmic intelligences appear not simply as metaphors, but as participants in shared planetary conditions. We welcome proposals that engage these questions through speculative, poetic, political, ecological, technological, historical, personal, or interdisciplinary approaches.

One artist will receive a $1,500 commission through the NEW WORK program to create a new work responding to the theme. Through the same application, artists will also be considered for ONE WORK, Prospect Art’s online conversation series centered on a single completed artwork, and BROADCAST, a curated program of screenings, artist talks, and discussions.

The opportunity is open to professional visual artists worldwide working across all media, including moving image, installation, sculpture, photography, performance, sound, digital media, and interdisciplinary practices. Artists currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studio art programs are not eligible to apply. Applications are accepted exclusively through Prospect Art’s online application form.
