The GroundTruth Institute Art-Science Incubator is an interactive online gathering designed to spark new collaborations between artists and scientists through meaningful cross-disciplinary exchange. Whether you’re an artist interested in integrating scientific inquiry into your practice or a scientist looking for creative approaches to community engagement or broader impact ideas, this Incubator provides a space to connect, learn, and begin building collaborative projects.

The event will feature presentations from art-sci collaborators Dana Fritz/Rose-Marie Muzika, Eric Zeigler/Aaron Ellison and Christine Fitzgerald/Aleksandra Nastic. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with both artist and scientist presenters during a live Q&A, then participate in facilitated breakout sessions to meet others with complementary research interests and explore potential collaborations. The Incubator will conclude with a group reflection on the experience and a conversation about future opportunities to grow this interdisciplinary community.

Presenter Bios: 

Dana Fritz explores how we shape and know land, engaging ideas about climate change, environmental history, and ecology in a place-based practice. Fritz’s work has been exhibited and collected widely across the United States, Europe, and Asia. She published Terraria Gigantica: The World under Glass with University of New Mexico Press in 2017 and Field Guide to a Hybrid Landscape with University of Nebraska Press in 2023. Fritz is a Professor of Art and a Center for Great Plains Studies Fellow at University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Rose-Marie Muzika earned a PhD from Michigan State University in Forestry, with an emphasis in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. She worked for the US Forest Service as a research entomologist and ecologist in
Oregon and West Virginia but spent most of her career at the University of Missouri as professor of forest ecology and forest health. More recently, she was hired as Director of Science at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, PA  and Director of the Museum’s field station.

Eric Zeigler is Associate Professor of Art at the University of Toledo. His research and artistic practice interrogate the underpinnings of the history of the photographic process by purposefully exploiting problematic contemporary Western cultural categorizations and presumptions that are placed on photographic and lens-based imagery.

Aaron Ellison is a Boston-based photographer, sculptor, writer, and Senior Research Fellow Emeritus in Ecology at Harvard University. His research and artistic practice focus on the disintegration and reassembly of ecosystems following natural and anthropogenic disturbances.

Christine Fitzgerald is a photo-based artist based in Ottawa, Canada. Her practice explores questions of loss, extinction, and the natural environment, challenging conventional photographic boundaries. Fitzgerald studied at the School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa, Acadia University, and Dalhousie University. Supported by the Ontario Arts Council, and Canada Council for the Arts, her work has been featured by CBC, The Washington Post, National Geographic, amongst others. Honors include the 2023 Karsh Award, the 2016 International Photography’s Fine Art Photographer of the Year, and was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2024. 

Aleksandra Nastic is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawa, leading research at the intersection of materials science, fluid dynamics, and advanced manufacturing. Her work focuses on engineering next-generation surfaces by unlocking unexplored material functionalities and creating tailored responses for extreme environments. Through collaborations, Nastic’s work bridges scientific discovery and technological innovation to develop transformative surface technologies for next-generation applications.

GroundTruth Institute is an artist-led, nonprofit arts organization that amplifies photographic engagement with ecology, environmental issues, and place-based research. Through an online archive, gatherings, and grants, GroundTruth supports lens-based artists by fostering community building through critical dialogue and collaboration.
