"We’re excited to share our Spring catalog with you, a heartening selection of books that opens with Fabric of a Nation: American Quilt Stories. From family heirlooms to acts of political protest, these quilts capture the experience of their makers—Americans of African, European, Hispanic and Native heritage. A metaphor for the rich tapestry of our country and the promise of mending our divisions, this message is not lost on us during such trying times as these. A number of our new books offer an invitation towards both reflection and change—most importantly in the arena of social and racial justice. Two stand-out titles include The Soul of a Nation Reader: Writings by and about Black American Artists, 1960–1980, a document of this period of radical social and political upheaval, and Arthur Jafa’s MAGNUMB, an essential survey of the artist’s video portraits of Black American life. As never before—and for good reason—many of our books this season open out to alternate realities. Take, for instance, the visionary painters of Another World: The Transcendental Painting Group, the fantasy scapes of Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, or the inner worlds of Leonora Carrington’s Tarot paintings. We’re finding much needed uplift in the vibrant, abstract language of the pioneering Dadaist Sophie Taeuber-Arp—whether emblazoned on textiles, paintings or stained glass—as well as the visual feast of Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings of worlds both natural and supernatural. Nature returns in David Hockney's iPad drawings of The Arrival of Spring in Normandy, Damien Hirst’s dappled Cherry Blossoms and Edward Burtynsky’s photographic chronicle of the dramatic cusp from winter to spring. All seem to herald brighter days ahead. “Remember to Dream!” exhorts the cover of Hans Ulrich Obrist’s collection of Post-it notes of musings, quotations, questions and puns from some of the world’s foremost artists. In this and in so many of our books this season, inspiration abounds. Here’s to a better year in 2021!"

"Artbook| D.A.P. invites you to join us for Reconstructing Aby Warburg's Bilderatlas Mnemosyne With Roberto Ohrt, Axel Heil, Bill Sherman, and Claudia Wedepohl. Thursday, February 11, 2021, 10:30 -11:30 am Zoom Link: https://zoom.us/j/96914980680 Created between 1925 and 1929, Aby Warburg’s Bilderatlas Mnemosyne is one of the most legendary artifacts of art history, constantly cited but until now seen only from reproductions of Warburg’s black-and-white photos. Now, in a historic achievement, Roberto Ohrt and Axel Heil have done what long seemed impossible, working with the staff of the Warburg Institute to search more than 400,000 images in the Institute’s Photo Collection, identifying Warburg’s original working materials from the Atlas and (for the first time) reconstructing the panels as they appeared at Warburg’s death in 1929. The reconstructed panels have formed the basis for both an exhibition and a facsimile edition, bringing the Atlas back to life and making it accessible as never before. Here Ohrt and Heil discuss their editorial labor, the Atlas and its influence, in conversation with Warburg Institute scholars Bill Sherman and Claudia Wedepohl"

University of Hawai'i at Manoa, Department of Art and Art History
The Department of Art and Art History (ART) offers two separate but interrelated programs. Art history, leading to the BA, affords the opportunity to study the arts of Asia, the Pacific, and the West in a historical and cultural context. The art studio programs provide students either with a broad-based, liberal arts approach via the BA or with a more focused studio specialization leading to the BFA. The latter is considered more appropriate for students intending to pursue the MFA at the graduate level.
